Lineker directs criticism towards the top
Gary Lineker has delivered a fierce assessment of Manchester United’s leadership, singling out Sir Jim Ratcliffe as the club continues to struggle both on and off the pitch.
Ratcliffe’s company, Ineos, assumed control of United’s football operations after the British billionaire acquired a minority shareholding from the Glazer family in February 2024. His stake has since risen to approximately 28.94 per cent, although the Glazers remain the club’s majority owners.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker argued that United’s difficulties could not be separated from the people making decisions above the manager.
“I look at Man United and I see problems coming down from the top,” Lineker said in comments reproduced by SPORTbible.

The former England striker also made a personal criticism of Ratcliffe, saying he did not consider him a particularly pleasant person. He suggested the Glazer family had found another senior figure capable of absorbing much of the public anger surrounding the club.
JJ Gabriel dispute adds to the turmoil
Lineker referred to the uncertain future of 15-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel as another indication of the disorder around Old Trafford.
Gabriel has reportedly asked Manchester United to cancel his registration, which would allow him to leave the academy. The club has declined the request while attempting to persuade one of England’s most highly rated young players to remain.
Because Gabriel is only 15, he cannot yet sign a professional contract. He becomes eligible for scholarship terms when he turns 16 on October 6, while English rules prevent him from agreeing professional terms until he is 17.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have all been linked with the teenager. However, no final decision regarding his next club has been officially confirmed.
Lineker also urged caution because the full circumstances behind Gabriel’s request are not publicly known. He nevertheless argued that becoming the subject of intense transfer coverage before playing senior football could be damaging to the player’s development.
A teenager with remarkable academy numbers
Gabriel’s possible departure would represent a major setback for United’s academy. The forward scored 26 goals and registered four assists in 29 appearances for the under-18 team during the 2025/26 season.
He was named the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year and trained with the senior squad on several occasions. His performances had created expectations that he could receive a first-team opportunity during the current campaign.

According to The Peoples Person’s account of his record, Gabriel began the new season with five goals and two assists across three appearances for United’s youth sides.
The prospect of losing such a player has raised questions about communication between the club, Gabriel and his representatives. It has not been established, however, that Ratcliffe personally caused the disagreement or managed the discussions.
Ratcliffe faces pressure beyond football
Lineker’s criticism followed controversial political comments from Ratcliffe about Britain’s economy, immigration and welfare spending. The Ineos founder, who lives in Monaco, has faced accusations of hypocrisy for criticising the United Kingdom while residing outside the country for tax purposes.
On the football side, Ratcliffe has overseen extensive cost-cutting, including hundreds of job losses, while attempting to improve United’s financial position. Results and recruitment have nevertheless remained inconsistent.

“It is a bit of a mess that club,” Lineker added, as Football365 quoted him.
Lineker’s assessment is an opinion rather than evidence that every problem originates with Ratcliffe. Yet the combination of poor results, structural changes and the threat of losing Gabriel has ensured that United’s football leadership remains under intense scrutiny.
