The international break has been the kinder end of a bruising month for Arsenal. Gyokeres has carried his Sweden form into the Nations League, scoring in each of his country’s recent fixtures and arriving at his first league start with the odd confidence of a striker who has barely played at club level.
That start has been forced on Arteta more than earned. Havertz pulled up with a hamstring issue in Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and has been sent back for assessment, with his recent record pushing the Arsenal manager towards caution. Gyokeres, limited to 29 minutes of league football across two cameo appearances, is the obvious beneficiary.
A striker short on league minutes
The Sweden international’s debut season produced goals against this same Leeds side, including a finish in Arsenal’s 4-0 win at Elland Road in January. This time he arrives with almost no club rhythm, a point that matters against a compact defence: Gyokeres is at his best as a penalty-box finisher, and Leeds under Daniel Farke tend to concede that kind of situation rather than space in behind.
Eze shifts out to the left
The second change is just as significant. Tzolis had been Arteta’s first-choice left winger before suffering a hamstring injury on Greece duty against the Netherlands, with the summer signing forced off after 18 minutes and now facing up to three weeks on the sidelines after a run of four assists in all competitions.

Eze, used primarily off the bench and in Europe since his move, is set to inherit the role.
He impressed in a cameo against Aston Villa that produced the pre-assist for Bukayo Saka’s winner, and tactical analysis of Arteta’s thinking points to a reshaped front line in which Eze operates on the left and Martin Odegaard anchors the creative work around Gyokeres.
Defensive boost after Brighton
The attacking rebuild is coloured by Arsenal’s last outing. A 3-0 defeat at the Amex on 19 September broke a run of four straight Premier League wins, and the question for Arteta is whether the problems that afternoon were about personnel or structure. Gyokeres and Eze offer different answers from what Havertz and Tzolis provided three weeks ago.
There is at least some help at the back. Ben White has returned to training and is expected to be available, while Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera are both close to selection. William Saliba remains out with a back issue.
