As England prepares for the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup, captain Harry Kane finds himself at a defining moment in his career. The Bayern Munich striker will be 33 years old shortly after the tournament concludes, making the 2026 World Cup likely his final opportunity to lift football’s biggest prize.

According to GOAL, Kane heads into the competition in the best form of his career after producing a remarkable season for Bayern Munich. The England captain scored more than 60 goals across all competitions, including 36 in the Bundesliga and 14 in the UEFA Champions League.

His extraordinary campaign earned him the European Golden Shoe, finishing nine goals ahead of Erling Haaland and 11 ahead of Kylian Mbappe. With 61 goals in total, Kane also moved into the top five highest-scoring seasons by a player in European football history.

Ballon d’Or Dream Remains Alive

Kane’s incredible form has also placed him firmly in the Ballon d’Or conversation. No English player has won football’s most prestigious individual award since Michael Owen in 2001, but Kane believes his achievements this season give him a realistic chance.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Kane said:

“I’d probably say I’ll be up there for sure. With the season I’ve had, I think with winning the three trophies, the numbers I’ve reached, I think I’ll be in that conversation. If I win the World Cup on top of that, you would imagine it would be one of the England players.”

The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London this year, adding further significance to what could be a historic season for the England captain.

Chasing World Cup History

Kane is also closing in on several World Cup milestones. He currently has eight goals in the competition, matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s total. Lionel Messi sits on 13 World Cup goals, while Kylian Mbappe has scored 12.

Closer to home, Kane is just two goals behind Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup goals for England.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Kane explained:

“Maybe the most World Cup goals by an English player. It’s 10 by Gary Lineker, and I’m on eight right now. So I have a good World Cup, I’ll be able to pass Lineker in that aspect.”

“These are all little things that would be great to do along the way. If we’re breaking those records, it means the team’s doing well and we’re probably winning games.”

Seeking Redemption on the Biggest Stage

The upcoming tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico also offers Kane the chance to put past World Cup disappointments behind him.

England reached the semi-finals in 2018 before losing to Croatia, while Kane endured personal heartbreak in 2022 when he missed a crucial penalty during the quarter-final defeat to France. Despite the setback, Kane believes the experience ultimately helped him grow.

According to GOAL, the striker described the miss as “personally a real tough moment” but admitted it made him “a better player in the end.”

Leading England’s Next Generation

England will once again rely heavily on stars such as Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden, but Kane’s leadership could prove just as important as his goals.

While there are some concerns about fatigue after a demanding 51-match season for Bayern Munich, Kane remains fully focused on helping England end their 60-year wait for a major international trophy.

“The ambition is to win it, obviously, that has to be our goal,” Kane told L’Equipe.

The England captain also stressed the importance of experienced players helping younger teammates enjoy the occasion and perform without fear.

With records within touching distance, individual awards on the horizon and a World Cup title still missing from his trophy cabinet, Kane’s final shot at global glory could define his legacy.
