Venezuelan football is mourning some of its own after the country was struck by two powerful earthquakes that caused widespread destruction and a rapidly rising death toll.

According to AP, the confirmed death toll had reached 1,430 by Saturday, while families had reported at least 68,900 people missing. Rescue workers and residents continued to search through collapsed buildings in La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit areas.

The disaster has also left a deep mark on the country’s football community, with players, youth prospects and relatives among those killed.

In another message, Bello tried to put words to the sacrifice Andrea made.

“How do I tell my daughter, Andrea? How do I explain to your daughter that you lost your life to save hers, and that I was not there in that moment to do anything? How do I explain it? Give me strength now, because I cannot take any more,” he wrote.
