Harry Kane put the dropped points squarely on Bayern Munich’s own defensive mistakes, refusing to hide behind Michael Olise’s red card after Tuesday’s 3-3 Champions League draw at Viking FK.

“We just made too many simple errors away against a good team. When you make such big mistakes, you’ll be punished. That’s exactly what happened today,” the England captain said at the post-match press conference, in comments distributed by Reuters.

“There are no excuses for it.”

Vincent Kompany’s side had been punished inside two minutes when Gianni Stensness headed Viking in front, and Peter Christiansen doubled the Norwegian hosts’ lead on 38 minutes. Three half-time substitutions by Kompany reset the match: Kane converted a penalty on 54 minutes, headed in a Joshua Kimmich cross on 60, and Luis Díaz put Bayern 3-2 up on 71.

Kane returned to how the night had started.

“It was a poor first half from us. We started the second half well and fought our way back. But the red card changed everything,” he said.

Olise red card hands Viking the lifeline

Bayern were still in front when Olise picked up a second yellow card for throwing the ball at Viking captain Zlatko Tripić. Herman Haugen then headed the equaliser in the 90th minute.

Kane put the onus on his team-mate in comments to ESPN.

“He’ll have to take responsibility obviously, he’ll have to learn from it. It’s a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now and he’s going to be gutted to miss those games.”

Kompany went further.

“This red card was super dumb,” the Bayern head coach said.

“You can see in Michael’s eyes that he’s sorry about it and that he regrets letting the team down.”

‘We should have won’

Kane extended his scoring run to a ninth successive Champions League match, but the England captain was not using his brace or the comeback as cover for how Bayern started.

“We should have won the game with the second-half performance. You take the point and you move on,” he said.

Kompany tied the night to a wider pattern.

“It’s our own fault. We made lapses in concentration. We weren’t smart,” the Belgian said, in comments carried by FCBinside.
