Iran’s FIFA World Cup preparations are in turmoil ahead of their opening fixture, as political tensions with the United States threaten to breach tournament regulations and sideline key officials. The situation, set against the backdrop of ongoing Middle East conflict, has seen Iran’s national team navigate significant logistical hurdles and visa denials.

According to a report from SPORTbible, the US government has approved visas for Iran’s players and “necessary support staff,” while a number of senior Iranian football officials, including Iran FA president Mehdi Taj, have reportedly been denied entry.

“The US government, continuing its hostile actions against the national team, made a non-sporting and completely political decision to refuse visas for key managerial and administrative members of the Iranian national football team,” the Iran FA stated, urging FIFA to intervene. “As the responsible body, [FIFA] has the duty to follow up and finalise the visas for the managerial, executive, technical and support staff of the Iranian national team who are currently in camp and whom the national team urgently needs.”

FIFA regulations challenged by travel restrictions

The visa issues directly impact FIFA regulations, particularly concerning media obligations. FIFA rules stipulate that each national team’s head coach must hold a press conference at the match venue on the day before the fixture. With Iran’s players and staff permitted to travel in and out of the US only on matchdays, head coach Amir Ghalenoei would be unable to fulfil this mandatory pre-match duty if the restrictions are fully enforced.

Adding to the logistical complexities, Iran’s training base was moved from the US to Mexico after the United States initially refused to host them. Despite requests from Iran to relocate their three group stage matches to Mexico, FIFA cited logistical issues in turning down the proposal. Mexico president Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed in April that “FIFA ultimately decided that the matches cannot be moved from their original venues.”

All group stage matches in the US

Despite the ongoing challenges, all three of Iran’s group stage matches will proceed as scheduled in the United States, a co-host of the tournament alongside Mexico and Canada. Iran’s schedule is as follows:

  • June 15 vs New Zealand at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California
  • June 21 vs Belgium at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California
  • June 26 vs Egypt at Lumen Field, Seattle

The necessity for the team to travel in and out of the US on matchdays for all three fixtures underscores the unique and politically charged environment surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament.
