Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has addressed the uncertain future of forward Marcus Rashford, currently on a season-long loan at Barcelona. With the Spanish giants facing a June 15 deadline to activate a buy option, Carrick acknowledged that significant decisions are on the horizon for the England international.

Rashford, 28, has endured a challenging period, falling out of favour at Old Trafford before his move to Barcelona. The Catalan club holds a €30m (£26.1m) option to make the transfer permanent, a figure the Manchester United hierarchy is reportedly unwilling to negotiate.

Complicating matters further, Rashford still has two years remaining on a lucrative contract with his boyhood club, a deal that would see his wages rise by 25% next season should United qualify for the Champions League.

“There’s decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation,” Carrick told BBC Sport. “But at this point in time, nothing’s been decided. It will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there’s nothing to say.”

A crossroads for Rashford and United

Carrick, himself a former teammate, coach, and interim manager for Rashford in 2021, now finds himself in interim charge of Manchester United, and is a leading contender for the full-time role this summer. His comments highlight the delicate balance between the club’s strategic direction and the player’s personal aspirations.

Rashford, Manchester United’s 15th all-time highest goalscorer, has not entirely closed the door on a return to Old Trafford. However, his desire for a fresh challenge has been evident. Under former manager Ruben Amorim, who left the club in January, there were reports that Rashford was allowed to join Aston Villa on loan in 2025, indicating a willingness to explore options away from Manchester.

Financial implications and a new era

The financial aspect of Rashford’s future is particularly pertinent given the new strategic direction under minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Ratcliffe is reportedly keen to lower the top-level amounts being paid to players at Manchester United. With Casemiro expected to depart this summer, Rashford is set to become United’s highest earner, making his contractual situation a key consideration for the club’s new regime.

Despite his club struggles, Rashford’s talent remains recognized on the international stage, with the forward likely to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for this summer’s World Cup. Carrick emphasized his coaching philosophy, regardless of player movements.

“Whoever’s here, I want to work with, and help them improve,” Carrick stated, as reported by Simon Stone of BBC Sport. “At the moment, it’s this squad of players. There’s obviously players on loan, and whatever happens with that later on will happen. But certainly, as a coach, and leader of a squad, we want to get the best out of everyone.”

As the June 15 deadline approaches, the coming weeks will prove crucial in determining whether Rashford’s future lies in Barcelona, or if a return to his boyhood club, under potentially new leadership and a revised financial structure, remains a possibility.
