Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Belgium captain Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
The 29-year-old midfielder has agreed a five-year contract and becomes the latest addition to Michael Carrick’s squad as United continue to rebuild their midfield ahead of the 2026/27 season.
According to Manchester United’s official announcement, Tielemans completed the move on Tuesday, July 14, shortly after helping Belgium reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said.

“Signing for such a special club feels incredible, it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.
“I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”
United add experience and leadership
Manchester United did not disclose the transfer fee, but The Guardian reported that the midfielder cost approximately £35 million.
The transfer brings an experienced Premier League player to Old Trafford. Tielemans previously represented Leicester City before joining Aston Villa on a free transfer in 2023.

He has made more than 240 Premier League appearances and has also played in the Champions League during spells with Anderlecht, Monaco and Villa.
Tielemans is best remembered by many English supporters for scoring Leicester’s winning goal against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final. He added another major honour in May 2026, scoring the opening goal as Villa defeated Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final.
He also captained Belgium during the World Cup, where the Red Devils were eliminated by Spain in the quarter-finals. United’s official player profile describes him as Belgium’s captain and highlights the experience he gained after making his senior breakthrough for Anderlecht at just 16.
Wilcox praises Tielemans’ consistency
United director of football Jason Wilcox believes the Belgian’s technical ability and leadership will strengthen the squad both on and off the pitch.

“Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years,” Wilcox said, as quoted by The Guardian.
“He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United.
“Youri’s consistency is exceptional and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad. We are delighted to welcome a player of his influence and experience, both on the pitch and within the dressing room, as we continue to build a team ready to challenge for the biggest honours.”
Tielemans is capable of playing in several central midfield roles. He can operate as a deeper playmaker, but is also comfortable moving forward and creating chances around the penalty area.
