According to Leeds Live, James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable playing career that spanned nearly a quarter of a century.

The veteran midfielder, who ends his career with Brighton & Hove Albion, leaves the game as the Premier League’s all-time appearance record holder and one of English football’s most respected professionals.

A career defined by longevity and versatility

Milner’s journey began at his boyhood club Leeds United, where he made his senior debut at just 16 years and 309 days old in November 2002. As reported by Leeds Live, he quickly made history by becoming the then-youngest goalscorer in Premier League history when he scored against Sunderland on Boxing Day later that year.

After making 54 appearances for Leeds, scoring five goals and providing two assists, Milner moved to Newcastle United in 2004. He would later enjoy spells with Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion, establishing himself as one of the most reliable and versatile players of his generation.

Across all competitions, Milner amassed 903 senior appearances, scoring 86 goals and registering 135 assists.
