Bruno Fernandes spent 90 minutes on the Old Trafford touchline on Sunday, warming up without being brought on, left out of the matchday 11 for a 3-0 loss his manager had publicly framed as “a football decision.”

Carrick made four changes after half-time, Matheus Cunha and Lisandro Martínez among them, as United chased the game. The United captain was never introduced, despite the deficit and despite an attack that produced the possession and shots but not a clear chance.

A FourFourTwo tactical column, written in the hours after the final whistle, argued that Carrick’s late moves effectively conceded the point Fernandes had made in public earlier in the week: United needed a braver, higher-pressing shape, not the containment the manager had set out.

Fernandes blames the manager

The row broke open after United’s midweek Champions League trip to Como, where they were beaten 4-1. Fernandes told Sky Sports that the responsibility for the plan sat with the manager and his staff.

“I think sometimes we have to be more brave on the pressure, trying to take a risk …”

Carrick, speaking in the same interview round, called the display “not acceptable” and warned his players could not “turn it on and off and … choose when you want to perform.”

Four days later, Fernandes was out of the Bournemouth 11.

Carragher sees a personal snub

Rayan opened the scoring with a 38th-minute finish from a Justin Kluivert free-kick, Marcus Tavernier doubled the lead just before half-time after Leny Yoro lost his footing, and Evanilson made it three on 71 minutes when goalkeeper Senne Lammens mistimed a challenge.

Jamie Carragher, on Sky Sports’ coverage, suggested the manager’s refusal to use Fernandes was personal.

“I don’t think he was ever going to bring him on. It was a deliberate decision to leave him on the bench to try and almost embarrass him.”

Carrick’s position narrowing

The result left United one point above the Premier League relegation zone, with his seat as hot as it has been since he took over in January after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.

Sky Bet makes Eddie Howe the odds-on favourite to replace him at 4/6, with Julian Nagelsmann the nearest rival at 5/2. Howe, out of work since parting with Newcastle in the summer, is willing to open talks with United, though the two sides are reported to be apart on a contract clause. No decision on Carrick’s position has been announced.
