The burgeoning transfer saga surrounding Julian Alvarez has escalated dramatically, with the Atletico Madrid forward reportedly desperate to join FC Barcelona, a move his current club is vehemently opposing. The impasse has reportedly taken a significant toll on Alvarez, who is said to be suffering from “severe depression” amidst the uncertainty.
Alvarez’s desire to move to Barcelona is unwavering, despite strong interest from Premier League champions Arsenal, according to reports. He has reportedly missed several training sessions this week, including one ahead of Atletico Madrid’s weekend clash with Sevilla. Spanish radio COPE, via Forbes, reported on the player’s mental health struggles, detailing the impact of the transfer drama.
Atletico’s unwavering stance
Atletico Madrid, however, remains steadfast in its refusal to negotiate with Barcelona. Chief executive Miguel Angel Gil has been unequivocal in his stance, even suggesting the club is attempting to steer Alvarez towards Arsenal.
“My personal dream is for Julian Alvarez to stay at Atleti,” Gil told Movistar, as reported by Sky Sports. “If he wants to leave the club, we will look for an alternative, but he will never, ever, ever go to Barcelona.”

Gil further expressed his dismay at the situation, stating, “Julian is in poor health. There are people who have taken it upon themselves to deceive and confuse him, and he is going through a difficult situation.” He added, “We are outraged and repulsed by this lack of ethics. We are not going to negotiate with Barcelona. The only firm decision is that we will not negotiate.”
An official statement from Atletico Madrid reiterated this position: “Atletico de Madrid is open to standard transfer market negotiations when conducted in a professional, ethical and respectful manner. We fully stand behind the club’s previously communicated position that FC Barcelona failed to meet these requirements and, as a result, there will not be any negotiation, and there is zero consideration of an Alvarez transfer to Barcelona.”
The legal pathway to a Camp Nou move
Despite Atletico’s firm refusal, a potential pathway for Alvarez to force a move to Barcelona exists through a unique Spanish legal provision. Under Spain’s Royal Decree No. 1006, a player can unilaterally terminate their contract. This mechanism, highlighted by Mundo Deportivo and GOAL, means FIFA cannot intervene, as the dispute involves two clubs from the same country.

“The termination of the contract at the will of the professional athlete, without a cause attributable to the club, grants the latter the right, where applicable, to receive compensation, and in the absence of an agreement on it, the labour judicial authority shall determine its value in accordance with the sporting circumstances, the damage suffered by the entity, the reasons for the termination of the contract, and all other elements the player deems possible to consider.”
Should Alvarez pursue this route, the courts would determine the compensation he would need to pay Atletico Madrid. Barcelona would then be responsible for covering this sum as the party liable in reserve. While Alvarez’s contract, signed when he joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024, includes an astronomical €490 million release clause, ordinary courts typically deem such figures “abusive” when imposed by clubs. The compensation would instead be calculated based on factors such as the remaining years on his contract (until 2030) and his annual gross salary of approximately €12.5 million.

As the transfer window rapidly approaches its closure on Tuesday, September 1, Barcelona remains determined to secure Alvarez, whom they reportedly view as a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski.
