Havertz was caught on the knee by a high boot from Netherlands midfielder Quinten Timber, received treatment and briefly tried to continue before going down again clutching the back of his thigh. He walked off in the 30th minute of Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

The exit came after Jamal Musiala had already been pulled out of the starting line-up in the warm-up with a thigh problem. Both went for MRI scans on the same night.

Klopp did not soften the outlook when he faced reporters afterwards.

“Both are currently undergoing an MRI. I hope we get the diagnosis this evening. But of course, this isn’t great,” the Germany manager said in the mixed zone.

Speaking separately to German broadcaster RTL, he told the network he hoped both players would recover quickly for their clubs before conceding the reality.

“They are probably out for us,” Klopp said.

Arsenal’s injury list keeps growing

Havertz had scored three times in seven competitive appearances this season and was starting at the front of Mikel Arteta’s attack before joining up with Germany, Read Arsenal noted. Declan Rice pulled out of the England squad during the break, William Saliba is on longer-term rehabilitation and Jurrien Timber, whose brother caught Havertz on Thursday, is being managed carefully.

The international window buys Arsenal a fortnight of grace. They are not back in Premier League action until they host Leeds United on 10 October. If a hamstring injury is confirmed, that fixture is likely to come too soon.

Klopp’s Germany debut soured

Thursday was Klopp’s first competitive match in charge of Germany, two months after his appointment as the successor to Julian Nagelsmann. A late Netherlands equaliser and two significant injuries in the space of an hour turned a low-key debut into a difficult first night for the former Liverpool coach.

Germany’s next fixture comes against Greece on Sunday. Klopp said the availability of Havertz and Musiala for that game was “highly doubtful”, and the scan results were expected in Amsterdam on Thursday evening.
