Ronald Koeman has stepped down as head coach of the Netherlands, closing his second spell in charge after a painful end to Oranje’s World Cup campaign.

According to Koeman’s Instagram statement, the 63-year-old made the decision after the Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco on penalties in the round of 32.

“Last night, I made the decision to conclude my tenure as head coach of the Dutch national team,” Koeman wrote.

A painful end to the Oranje dream

For Koeman, the departure comes with clear sporting disappointment. The Netherlands entered the tournament with ambitions of making history, but their campaign ended earlier than expected.

“We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would make history. That did not happen,” Koeman wrote, adding: “No one is more disappointed about that than I am.”

The former defender also made clear that he accepted responsibility for the team’s exit, saying the burden of that result belongs with the national coach.

According to the KNVB’s official announcement on OnsOranje, Koeman told the Dutch football association that he would not extend his expiring contract. The federation said the decision was made one day after the World Cup elimination.

Family now comes first

Koeman’s decision was also shaped by personal circumstances. His wife, Bartina, has been undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and he said recent years had reminded him that football is not everything.

“Football has been my life, but health is priceless,” Koeman wrote.

He also paid tribute to Bartina’s support during his time with the national team, describing how she encouraged him to finish the job despite her own illness.

The KNVB also pointed to the personal side of the decision. Koeman said it was now time to spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren, calling it “the right and logical choice.”

KNVB begins search for successor

Koeman’s second spell as Netherlands coach began in 2023. His first period in charge ran from 2018 to 2020, before he left for Barcelona.

Across his two spells, he led Oranje in 64 official international matches. He guided the Netherlands to the final of the 2019 UEFA Nations League and to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, where England won 2-1.

KNVB director of top football Nigel de Jong said the federation respects Koeman’s decision and has already begun its post-World Cup evaluation.

With the UEFA Nations League beginning in September, the Dutch football association now faces the task of finding a new national coach quickly, but carefully.
