Bayern Munich put the ball in the Augsburg net six times on Saturday. Two of them counted. The 2-2 Bundesliga draw left head coach Vincent Kompany somewhere between amused and bewildered as he tried to make sense of a result nobody in Munich had seen coming.

“It was an emotional rollercoaster. We had the ball in the net six times, but four didn’t count,” Kompany said.

“We’re not happy, because we didn’t win. But it isn’t an easy away fixture.”

Luis Díaz had an early finish ruled out for offside in the build-up to Augsburg’s opener. He and Serge Gnabry later saw further efforts chalked off, with four strikes in total wiped off the board.

Fellhauer’s record-breaking 8.4 seconds

The afternoon’s defining moment arrived before Bayern had even touched the ball. From the kick-off, Manuel Neuer took a pass back, dallied, and tried to chip the ball over the onrushing Fellhauer. He missed. The Augsburg midfielder stabbed it into the empty net after just 8.4 seconds, the fastest goal in Bundesliga history. The previous mark of nine seconds had been held jointly by Kevin Volland and Karim Bellarabi.

Ismael Saibari levelled before the break, converting a Kane assist. Rodrigo Ribeiro restored Augsburg’s lead in the second half after Neuer parried a shot straight at him, and Nathaniel Brown eventually rescued a point in the 80th minute, again set up by Kane.

Kompany was asked about the 40-year-old Neuer. He kept his answer short.

“Manu has played football long enough. He can’t change what happened, he just needs to keep on showing how good he is.”

Kane: ‘It feels more like a defeat’

Kane did not score but was voted man of the match after assisting both Bayern goals. His verdict was blunt.

“It feels more like a defeat. On another day we would have won this game, but that’s football. We gave away two sloppy goals and they punished us for it.”

Bayern finished the match with 29 shots and struck the woodwork twice. On a different afternoon, with a different assistant referee, the scoreboard would have read very differently.

“Things obviously got off to a bad start with conceding that really early goal,” the midfielder said.

“The final 20-30 minutes in particular were a big powerplay. I’d call it an unlucky draw.”
