Lamine Yamal between expectations, criticism and heavy comparisons

A talent already under scrutiny

At just 18, Lamine Yamal has become one of the symbols of the new Barcelona, a team rebuilding after the Messi era. Raised at La Masia and promoted early to the first team, Yamal has long been considered one of the most exciting players of his generation and is regularly compared to other great talents developed by the club.

His impact was immediate, with goals, assists and a level of technical maturity unusual for a player his age. His performances even earned him second place in the 2025 Ballon d Or race, a recognition that only amplified expectations around him.

Criticism after a difficult spell

Despite his undeniable quality, this season has brought challenges. Several Spanish sports outlets have highlighted a dip in his influence in recent weeks, partly due to a persistent groin issue that has troubled him since early autumn and partly due to some less decisive performances, such as the Champions League match at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

Off the pitch, additional noise has surfaced. Spanish media report that Yamal has been at the centre of attention for reasons unrelated to football, including a widely debated 18th birthday celebration and verbal tensions with Real Madrid. For someone so young, the weight of this scrutiny can be considerable.

Saha’s remarks and the comparison with Messi and Ronaldo

In an interview with OLBG, Louis Saha offered a blunt assessment of the teenager’s trajectory. The former striker believes Yamal possesses extraordinary gifts but has not yet shown the total commitment that defined the careers of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He also warned that excessive media noise could hinder his development. Saha pointed to Neymar as an example of a phenomenal talent whose career was shaped by distractions and choices away from the pitch. According to him, a massive transfer at a young age would not help Yamal’s progress and the player should remain at Barcelona as long as possible.

Future ambitions and personal goals

Despite the criticism, Yamal continues to appear determined. In a recent interview with Marca, he repeated that he aims for the biggest prizes in world football, including the Champions League, the World Cup and the Ballon d Or. It is an ambitious target but consistent with the confidence Barcelona’s technical staff has always placed in him.

The club’s management sees him as a potential future emblem of the team, while international observers note that, despite the enormous attention, he is still a young man who must develop both as a player and as a person.

Time commitment is crucial

Lamine Yamal finds himself at a crucial stage of his career. On one hand he has talent and ambition, on the other the pressure around him is rising quickly. Saha’s comments add another layer to the discussion but also serve as a reminder that building an elite career requires time, balance and the ability to manage what happens off the field as carefully as what happens on it.
