Munir Nasraoui had a message to deliver on Saturday night, and he waited until his son had scored twice to deliver it.

With Barcelona wrapping up a 6-1 win over Alavés at Spotify Camp Nou, the father of 19-year-old Lamine Yamal went live on his social media feed and corrected something commentators and fans around the world get wrong every weekend.

“Lamine Yamal is his name. As for his two surnames, they are Nasraoui Ebana, just so you are aware of that,” Nasraoui told his audience in comments picked up by Livescore.

The reveal is simple but had clearly been bugging him. “Yamal” is not a family name. Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana is the full version on his papers, with “Lamine Yamal” acting as a double first name and Nasraoui Ebana as the family side.

The heritage behind both surnames

The two surnames reflect dual heritage. Nasraoui comes from the father, who emigrated from Larache in northern Morocco to Spain as a boy. Ebana comes from his mother Sheila Ebana, born in Bata in Equatorial Guinea.

The double surname is routine in Spain, where children carry the first surname of each parent. Outside the country it has stayed hidden behind the two words everyone already knows.

Named after the friends who paid the bills

The first name itself has a backstory. According to Sports Illustrated, his parents promised two close friends, one called Lamine and one called Yamal, that they would name their son after them in gratitude for financial help before the boy was born. In Arabic, Lamine means “the faithful” and Yamal means “beauty”.

That is why the player goes by both words on his back. His father used them together from the start, and the name stuck through Barcelona’s academy and into the first team.

Nasraoui’s shot at Real Madrid

The livestream was not purely a linguistics lesson. After the final whistle Nasraoui compared one of his son’s assists to the trickery of Djalminha, the Brazilian playmaker who starred at Deportivo La Coruña, and added a jab aimed at Real Madrid. He told viewers that Madrid would not top the table while Lamine Yamal was on the pitch.

The scoreline helped him make it. The 6-1 win at Spotify Camp Nou sent Hansi Flick’s side back to first place in LaLiga, with Yamal himself scoring in first-half stoppage time and again shortly after the hour.

Third in the 2026 Ballon d’Or

Whatever his father calls him, Lamine Yamal goes into the November international break as one of the biggest names in the sport. He finished third in the 2026 Ballon d’Or behind winner Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé, after a 25-goal, 20-assist season in all competitions for Barcelona.
