A top-flight club publicly weighing legal action over a tackle on one of its own players is rare in European football. Lille are doing it anyway. In a statement after Saturday’s 1-0 win at Le Havre, the club said they were “exploring all possible legal avenues” following the challenge that left Tiago Santos with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

The 24-year-old Portuguese right-back, a Portugal Under-21 international, was hurt in a tackle by Le Havre midfielder Amir Richardson. Neither referee Bastien Dechepy nor the VAR deemed the challenge worthy of punishment.

Lille told the French Football Federation (FFF) and the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) that they want the video-review decision explained, writing in their statement that:

“The circumstances of the incident and the lack of any sanction raise serious questions for the club.”

‘Reserves the right to take any legal action’

The language of Lille’s statement went further than most clubs ever risk in print.

“LOSC is exploring all possible legal avenues and reserves the right to take any legal action necessary to obtain compensation for its losses,” the club said.

The statement also promised to back the player personally, pledging to “support Tiago in any steps he decides to take to defend his rights.”

Compensation claims against another club over an on-pitch injury are extremely unusual in French football, where disciplinary matters normally stay inside the FFF’s own commissions. Lille have not specified what court or tribunal they would use.

Second ACL rupture in two years

The injury is the second anterior cruciate ligament tear of Santos’s career. In October 2024 he ruptured the ACL in his left knee, which cost him most of that season. He had worked his way back to the Lille starting XI under Davide Ancelotti this term, only for his right knee to go in Normandy.

He is expected to miss the rest of the 2026-27 campaign.

Le Havre push back

Le Havre defended their player and questioned Lille’s attempt to pull the referee’s decision apart after the final whistle.

“Given this, HAC questions LOSC’s move to have the FFF and the LFP punish its player after the fact, since such a decision would fall outside the current regulations,” the Normandy club said.

Le Havre added that “HAC respects all fellow Ligue 1 clubs and expects the same respect in return.”

Opta makes Arsenal 71% favourites

Davide Ancelotti takes his side to Arsenal on Tuesday for a Champions League league-phase meeting between two of their domestic leagues’ second-placed clubs. Kick-off is at 8pm local time at the Emirates Stadium, with Opta’s model giving Arsenal a 71% chance of victory. It is the first competitive match between the clubs.
