Mason Greenwood’s return to English soil arrives on a Champions League night that Aston Villa might otherwise have treated as routine. The 25-year-old lines up for Fenerbahce at Villa Park on Wednesday, a little over three years after his boyhood club in Manchester cut ties with him.

Fenerbahce paid Marseille €39m to sign Greenwood on a four-year contract in July, winning the race over higher bidders including Atletico Madrid, who had offered up to €45m, and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.

“It was a no-brainer when they [were] interested in me,” Greenwood said after signing. “It’s the biggest club in Turkey and I can’t wait to get started.”

Greenwood was charged in October 2022, but English prosecutors dropped the case in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew. Manchester United and the player agreed to part ways that August. A season-long loan at Getafe in 2023-24 brought eight La Liga goals, and Marseille signed him permanently in July 2024. By the end of his first season at the Vélodrome, Greenwood was joint top scorer in Ligue 1 with 21 goals.

A manager who tried to resign a month ago

Fenerbahce arrive in Birmingham with a storm barely behind them. Head coach İsmail Kartal announced his resignation at the post-match press conference after his side’s 1-1 draw with Roma on 11 September, after a spectator struck him on the head with a water bottle during the game.

Club president Aziz Yıldırım refused to accept the move within minutes.

“I just spoke to Ismail Kartal. I told him to continue and that’s it. We are a family,” Yıldırım told reporters that night.

Kartal, 65, has stayed in post.

A familiar face in Fenerbahce’s attack

Marco Asensio knows the pitch Greenwood will walk out on. The Spaniard spent the second half of 2024-25 on loan at Aston Villa before moving permanently to Istanbul from Paris Saint-Germain in September 2025 for €7.5m plus bonuses. He is expected to line up alongside Greenwood against the club he scored for less than a year ago.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa opened their league-phase campaign with a 3-2 win over Club Brugge; Fenerbahce’s draw with Roma left them with a point from matchday one.

Manchester United will be watching with their chequebook. A sell-on clause worth around 40 to 50 per cent of any future sale, inserted into Greenwood’s 2024 move to Marseille, means United stand to collect roughly €20m from the Fenerbahce transfer.
