According to BBC Sport’s Simon Stone, Marcus Rashford is set to make an unexpected return to Manchester United for the 2026-27 season, despite widespread expectations that his future lay elsewhere after a season-long loan at Barcelona. The 28-year-old forward, who was unveiled by the Catalan giants in July 2025, is now back at Old Trafford after Barcelona decided against making his move permanent.
Rashford enjoyed a productive spell in Spain, playing an important role in Barcelona’s successful campaign. The England international helped the club win the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup, while also contributing to their run to the Champions League quarter-finals.
His individual numbers reflected his impact:
- 11 goals
- 14 assists
Despite those contributions, Barcelona opted not to trigger the £26 million purchase option included in the loan agreement. Their decision followed the arrivals of German winger Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund on July 23 and England international Anthony Gordon, strengthening Hansi Flick’s attacking options.

Rashford confirmed his departure with an emotional farewell message on social media on July 30, bringing an end to his season in Catalonia.
His return to Manchester United comes as a surprise, particularly after the club handed his iconic No. 10 shirt to summer signing Matheus Cunha, a move widely interpreted as confirmation that Rashford had played his final game for the Red Devils.
Financial challenge for Manchester United
Rashford’s return also presents a financial dilemma for United. His contract runs until 2028, and his reported salary of £325,000 per week makes him the club’s highest-paid player.
That wage sits uneasily alongside minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s commitment to reducing the club’s wage bill, a strategy that has reportedly influenced United’s relatively cautious transfer activity following the £35 million signing of Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans on July 14.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick admitted he was disappointed to lose Rashford after a pre-season match in Birmingham.
“He is a fantastic player and a fantastic person. The team miss him, I will miss him, but it is life. This is what we have to accept.”
Rashford himself had spoken positively about Manchester United during his Barcelona unveiling last summer, despite leaving the club on loan.
“This is in a period of change and have been for a while. I don’t have anything bad to say as it has been an important part, not just of my career but my life, so I was grateful for the opportunity. I wish them all the best and hope they are successful in the future.”

A fresh opportunity at Old Trafford?
If he follows the same schedule as Manchester United’s other World Cup participants, Rashford is expected to join the squad at their training camp in Maynooth, Republic of Ireland, next week.
His first appearance back in United colours could come against Leeds United at Croke Park on August 12 or against AC Milan in Wroclaw on August 15, where he could face former United boss Ruben Amorim.
Rashford already occupies an impressive place in Manchester United history. His 138 goals leave him 15th on the club’s all-time scoring list, and he requires just 17 more to draw level with Paul Scholes in 10th place.
According to BBC Sport, sources close to the player believe Rashford enjoys a strong working relationship with current Manchester United manager Michael Carrick. Carrick was on the pitch for 32 of Rashford’s goals as a teammate and also managed him for three matches during his caretaker spell in 2021.

Although several Premier League and overseas clubs have expressed interest, Manchester United are reportedly unwilling to sanction either a cut-price sale or another loan move. Supporters remain divided over Rashford’s return, with some questioning whether he can rediscover his best form, while others believe a fresh start under Carrick could revive his career.
With the summer transfer window remaining open until September 1, Rashford’s future is still far from certain, but for now, the academy graduate appears set for an unexpected return to the club where his professional journey began.
