A camera pan after Melania Trump’s speech at the United Nations showed rows of empty seats, turning the room itself into a talking point. There is no confirmed attendance figure, but the images drew a starkly different kind of attention from the sporting partnership she had promoted just a month earlier.
In August, IndyCar and Fox Corporation announced a $2 million donation to Fostering the Future, Trump’s American initiative supporting young people from foster care. The money was earmarked for scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University. The partnership also gave her campaign a place across IndyCar’s race weekend in Washington.
Her campaign was on every car
Every car at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix carried a specially designed Be Best logo, according to the White House announcement. Fostering the Future branding appeared on the circuit, while an IndyCar bearing both campaign names was displayed in the White House Rose Garden ahead of the race. It was unusually prominent exposure for a first lady’s initiative at a major sporting event, backed by a donation with a specified purpose.
Trump attended the race with the president. They took a ceremonial lap in the presidential limousine and met former Indianapolis 500 winners before the start. Race organisers estimated that more than 215,000 spectators visited the circuit over the weekend, IndyCar reported. Those people came to watch racing; the figure says nothing about support for the Trumps. The sporting partnership’s financial contribution and its visibility, however, are both documented.

The UN speech concerned a separate initiative
At the UN on 22 September, Trump was speaking about Fostering the Future Together, an international coalition focused on children’s access to technology and education. The White House said the coalition had grown to 57 participating countries and announced new technology partnerships. The IndyCar and Fox donation went to her American foster youth scholarship programme, not to this UN coalition.
That distinction gives the sports story its substance. IndyCar did more than offer Trump a seat at an event: it put her campaign on every race car and helped fund scholarships. The UN footage shows how quickly a different public appearance can be defined by a single camera shot. The empty chairs establish neither the size of the full audience nor why those seats were vacant, but they have placed fresh attention on a first lady whose recent work has also received significant backing from sport.
