Munster Rugby has secured the long-term future of promising flanker Michael Foy, who has signed a new contract that will see him promoted to the senior squad for the 2027/28 season. The 20-year-old will continue his development within the province’s Academy for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign, completing his third year in the pathway before making the step up.
Foy, who joined the Munster Academy in June 2024, has rapidly emerged as a player of significant potential. He was a standout performer for the Ireland U20s in 2025, playing a pivotal role in their Six Nations campaign and featuring in three matches during the U20s World Championship. In total, he has earned eight caps for the Ireland U20s.
Pathway to the senior team
Beyond his international age-grade commitments, Foy has also gained valuable experience at provincial and club level. He has featured in eight Interprovincial Championship games for Munster A, showcasing his abilities against senior opposition. His club rugby experience includes 15 Energia AIL games across spells with UCC and his club, Cork Constitution.
Foy’s journey through the Munster system began early, having played in back-to-back Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup finals with Christian Brothers College. He also represented Carrigaline RFC, Cork Constitution FC, and CBC at underage levels, highlighting a strong foundation in Munster rugby.

A new generation of talent
Foy’s impending promotion is part of a wider trend at Munster Rugby, which continues to integrate talent from its Academy into the senior ranks. He will follow in the footsteps of four other Academy players who are set to move up to the senior squad next season: Max Clein, Seán Edogbo, Ronan Foxe, and Ben O’Connor. This strategic approach underscores Munster’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent and providing a clear pathway for its most promising young players.
