Morgan Rogers opens up on brutal career low before £117m Chelsea move

Three years before Chelsea paid a British-record £117m to sign him from Aston Villa, Morgan Rogers was managing one goal on loan at Bournemouth and quietly wondering whether he would…

Rogers has used an interview with BBC Sport to retrace the lowest point of his career, when his market value sank to around £1m and his season-long loan from Manchester City to the south coast was cut short at the halfway mark.

He started only three matches at Bournemouth and scored once, against Luton Town in the Championship. By the winter he was back in City’s academy, no longer in the senior picture and uncertain how far he had actually fallen.

He did not pretend any of it had been easy.

“I think the academy player I was, if you watch me then, is not the same player I am now. I am a completely different player. I had to learn that on loan.”

That version of Rogers also carried two other awkward entries on his record: six goals and two assists in 28 League One matches at Lincoln City, and a single Championship goal in 20 appearances at Blackpool.

A £1m valuation, then a reset at Middlesbrough

The way back ran through the second tier. Manchester City eventually sold him to Middlesbrough for £1m, where a run of five goals in a six-match Carabao Cup push rebuilt his stock. Aston Villa signed him for an initial £8m, and by the end of the 2025-26 season he had scored in a Europa League final and settled into the England squad.

Then came the move that nobody around him had imagined in the Bournemouth winter. On 22 July 2026, Chelsea completed a £117m deal with Villa and handed him a contract until 2033. The fee broke the British record set only days earlier by Elliot Anderson’s £116m switch from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City.

“I’m so excited,” Rogers said on arrival at Stamford Bridge. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.”

‘I just care about what I can control’

What he told BBC Sport about the long road to that moment was less about the price tag and more about what he picked up when the game appeared to be pushing him away.

“I needed that next challenge, to be taken out of my comfort zone and find the player I was going to be in professional football.”

“The one thing I learned when going through these difficult loans is that I couldn’t care less what people say about me. I just care about what I can control.”

Asked what the EFL stretch of his career had taught him, he answered in a single word: “Everything.”

Chelsea’s record signing lands in a rebuild

Rogers has walked into a new era at Stamford Bridge. Xabi Alonso was appointed on a four-year deal and took charge from 1 July 2026, inheriting a squad still being reassembled around nine-figure signings.

The schedule offers an immediate loop back to where this story started: Chelsea host Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on 10 October.
