According to SPORTbible, Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 Premier League victory over West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with Leandro Trossard netting the decisive goal. However, the Gunners’ narrow win was overshadowed by a hugely controversial VAR decision that saw a West Ham equaliser ruled out, prompting a furious reaction from Manchester United and Manchester City legend Peter Schmeichel.

Disallowed goal sparks lengthy VAR review

The key flashpoint came when West Ham striker Callum Wilson appeared to level the match late in the second half. Celebrations inside the London Stadium were quickly cut short, though, as VAR official Darren England launched an extensive review into the build-up.

After nearly five minutes of analysis, officials eventually ruled out Wilson’s effort for a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. The decision immediately divided opinion, with many fans and pundits questioning whether the contact warranted intervention.

For West Ham, who are battling to avoid relegation, the overturned goal represented a devastating moment. Arsenal, meanwhile, strengthened their position in the Premier League title race thanks to the narrow win.

Peter Schmeichel slams decision

Speaking on Viaplay after the match, Schmeichel did not hide his frustration with both the outcome and the process behind the VAR check.

“And then we get to this point, it takes VAR five minutes, Darren England the VAR, it takes five minutes,” Schmeichel said.

“He starts it over again and starts it over again and again… that in itself puts so much doubt into that decision that it cannot be a free-kick.”

The former Denmark international also criticised what he sees as a lack of consistency in officiating standards throughout the season.

“I think it’s so wrong. I just don’t understand why all of a sudden that’s a free-kick, because it’s not been for any teams all the way throughout the season,” he added.

“All this, it’s just crazy. And that decision today, it’s just so wrong on so many levels.”

VAR debate continues

The incident has once again reignited debate surrounding VAR and the consistency of officiating in the Premier League. While the technology was introduced to reduce clear and obvious mistakes, controversial interventions continue to dominate headlines on a weekly basis.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will simply be relieved to leave East London with three points, while West Ham are left to wonder what might have been after a decision that could have major implications at both ends of the table.
