Portugal’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 was overshadowed by a heated debate regarding Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance and the commentary surrounding it. Broadcaster Piers Morgan launched a scathing attack on BBC Sport’s commentators, accusing them of “pathetic” negativity towards the 41-year-old superstar.

Ronaldo’s pivotal, controversial performance

The high-stakes encounter at Toronto Stadium saw Portugal secure a late win, but not without significant drama. Cristiano Ronaldo, making a record sixth World Cup finals appearance, opened his knockout stage account with his first-ever goal at this stage of the tournament, converting a penalty. He also had a well-taken goal disallowed for offside on the hour-mark, a decision that further fueled the narrative around his impact.

With the score tied at 1-1, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez substituted Ronaldo in the 81st minute. The decision proved pivotal as Goncalo Ramos scored Portugal’s winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage-time. The drama continued deep into added time when Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol appeared to have snatched an equalizer in the 13th minute of stoppage-time, only for it to be controversially ruled out by VAR. FIFA later released a statement confirming the decision, citing Mario Pasalic as offside in the build-up.

The match also marked a likely farewell for another veteran, Luka Modric, 40, who is expected to have played his last World Cup game for Croatia. Portugal now advances to face Spain in the last 16.

Morgan’s “pathetic” critique of BBC

Despite Ronaldo’s penalty and disallowed goal, the BBC Sport commentary team, led by Steve Wilson with co-commentator Stephen Warnock, drew the ire of Piers Morgan. The outspoken journalist took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his frustration, stating:

Warnock, speaking after Ronaldo’s substitution, had offered a critical assessment of the forward’s overall contribution. “Cristiano Ronaldo is not happy. He is not happy at all. Take the name out of it, it’s the right decision. He hasn’t affected the game enough. Yes, he scored the penalty. The link-up play, the pressing, it is not there from him. For the good of the team, that’s what Roberto Martinez has to think about. You have got to put your ego aside and think of the bigger picture at the moment and hope that your team can get through,” Warnock commented, as reported by GiveMeSport.

Goal.com also provided a mixed review of Ronaldo’s performance, awarding him a 6/10 rating and noting it was “a really weird game” where he “didn’t play particularly well, scored a wonderful goal that was ruled offside, buried a pen, got subbed.”

The debate surrounding Ronaldo’s role and impact continues to be a central talking point as Portugal progresses deeper into the tournament, with his individual contributions scrutinized against the team’s collective success.
