The Premier League summer transfer window for the 2026/27 season is officially underway, with early activity seeing several high-profile players depart English clubs and significant fees already exchanged. Despite the ongoing World Cup, clubs are wasted no time in shaping their squads ahead of the window’s closure on September 1, according to GiveMeSport.

The financial might of the Premier League is once again evident, even in the initial stages of the window. Newcastle United has sanctioned the most expensive departure so far, with Anthony Gordon making a €69 million move to Barcelona. Chelsea also saw a substantial exit, as Marc Cucurella transferred to Real Madrid for €52 million.

Tottenham Hotspur has been particularly active in the early market, securing three notable additions:

  • Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for €52 million
  • Andy Robertson from Liverpool on a free transfer
  • Marcos Senesi from AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer

These moves suggest a clear intent from Spurs to reinforce their squad with both established talent and proven Premier League experience.

Liverpool and Manchester clubs see significant changes

Liverpool has been busy on both fronts, bringing in two major signings while also bidding farewell to club legends. The Reds have invested heavily in their defence and midfield:

  • Jeremy Jacquet arrived from Rennes for €60 million
  • Victor Munoz joined from Osasuna for €34.5 million

However, the Anfield club has also seen significant departures, including the release of long-serving forward Mohamed Salah and defender Rhys Williams, alongside Andy Robertson’s free transfer to Tottenham.

Manchester United has also made headlines with some high-profile exits. Striker Rasmus Hojlund moved to Napoli for €38 million, while midfield general Casemiro departed for Inter Miami on a free transfer. Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia were also released by the Old Trafford club. Across the city, Manchester City opted to release two of their stalwarts, Bernardo Silva and John Stones, signaling a potential shift in their squad dynamics.

Brighton’s shrewd business and other notable incomings

Brighton & Hove Albion, despite losing Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham for a substantial fee, has reinvested in new talent. The Seagulls secured Zadok Yohanna from AIK Stockholm for €21.5 million and Costinha from Olympiacos for €8 million, continuing their reputation for intelligent recruitment.

Elsewhere in the league, Brentford strengthened their squad with Jannik Schuster from RB Salzburg for €17 million, while Newcastle United added Ewen Jaouen from Reims for €18.5 million. Promoted side Ipswich Town has also made early moves, bringing in Chuba Akpom from Ajax for €7 million and Cedric Kipre from Reims for €2.2 million, indicating their ambition for the top flight.

As the World Cup continues to dominate headlines, Premier League clubs are quietly laying the groundwork for the upcoming season, with more significant transfers expected before the window closes on September 1.
