Fenerbahce confirmed the charges on Thursday, a week after Guendouzi and Greenwood were at the center of chaotic scenes at the Groupama Stadium.
The Istanbul club said in a statement that “a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA regarding our players Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our Club” following the playoff second leg. Fenerbahce added that they would “present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA bodies in order to protect the rights and interests of our players and Fenerbahce during this process.”
Both players are at risk of being ruled out of the home league-phase opener against Roma on 10 September if UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body imposes a match ban before then. The club also faces potential fines and a possible restriction on away-supporter tickets.
What happened in Lyon
Fenerbahce won 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate to reach the league phase. Guendouzi, a former Marseille player, then celebrated in front of the Lyon supporters with the “Allez l’OM” chant of the home club’s fiercest rivals, triggering a mass brawl that spilled from the pitch into the tunnel.
Lyon goalkeeper coach Antonio Ferreira then emerged from the tunnel area and fly-kicked the France midfielder, setting off a second confrontation that security staff had to break up. Greenwood, alongside Guendouzi during the celebrations, was also seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture toward the home supporters.
Guendouzi points to abuse from stands
Speaking after the match, Guendouzi said the home crowd had targeted his family throughout the evening.
“When 60,000 people insult your family, your mother, your children even before the match and no one in the stadium tells them to be quiet. If you want to provoke, it works both ways,” he said. “If you cannot celebrate as you want to, if you cannot make the JUL sign, where are we going?”
Greenwood back in the European spotlight
Greenwood is in his first season at Fenerbahce after joining from Marseille for a reported €39m ($44.5m) on a four-year deal, having also been pursued by Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old former Manchester United forward scored 21 Ligue 1 goals in 2024-25, sharing the season’s top-scorer award with Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé.

His time at United ended after he was suspended in 2022 over assault allegations. The case was dropped in 2023, and he was loaned to Getafe in Spain before Marseille signed him.
Fenerbahce’s next Champions League fixture is at home to Roma on 10 September, with UEFA expected to rule on the case before that date.
