Days after Paul Seixas rode away alone on the Civiglio climb to win Il Lombardia at 20, his team is already weighing which Grand Tour the Frenchman tackles next year, and the answer so far is “we’ll see”.

Decathlon CMA CGM sports director Julien Jurdie told Ouest-France that Seixas’s 2027 programme will again take in Strade Bianche, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia, with a Grand Tour podium the long-term goal.

“He should again target Monuments such as Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Lombardia, and naturally the idea will be to aim for a podium in a Grand Tour.”

“We’ll see which Grand Tour he rides.”

Jurdie’s wording keeps the Giro d’Italia on the table rather than locked in. The Italian race’s 2027 edition is being tipped as a draw for several of the sport’s biggest names, and a May start would give Seixas longer rest before the autumn block of Monuments he is already pencilled in to defend.

A Lombardia record that reset the clock

The 2027 call lands on the back of one of the loudest results of the European autumn. On 10 October, Seixas soloed clear with 18 kilometres to go and finished 48 seconds up on Enric Mas, with Giulio Ciccone a further 17 seconds back in third.

At 20 years and 16 days he became the youngest rider to win Il Lombardia, taking a record that had stood with Giovanni Gerbi since 1905. The same victory completed a Flèche Wallonne-Lombardia double in a single season, a combination only a handful of riders have managed, Tadej Pogacar, Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault among them.

Seixas was not interested in the age milestone at the finish.

“I don’t really care about being the youngest or whatever, I just care about winning.”

“Today I won a Monument and that’s beautiful, that’s all I will remember.”

Not a Grand Tour debut

The 2027 decision is not about Seixas’s first Grand Tour. He already rode the 2026 Tour de France in July and finished fourth overall at 19, narrowly missing the podium behind Isaac del Toro.

A Giro move would place his main Grand Tour effort in May rather than July and set him against a different field. Lining him up at the Tour would put him directly against Pogacar, a confrontation Jurdie has already said he expects fans to want.

“I think everyone now wants to see that battle between Paul and Pogačar.”

Decathlon CMA CGM has not set a date for the final call, and no part of Seixas’s Grand Tour schedule for 2027 has been announced.
