Manchester City have won every league game they have played this season, and lost the one European game that mattered most. The 4-2 defeat in Paris on Wednesday ended an eight-match winning run across all competitions.
The response needed is now a domestic one, against a side City last played 6-0 at Portman Road in January 2025. Only Chelsea in 2005-06 and Liverpool in 2019-20 have ever opened a Premier League season with seven wins from seven. Both went on to win the title.
Enzo Maresca, who took the City job in late June on a three-year deal, framed the quick turnaround as a help rather than a hindrance.
“It’s a chance for us to bounce back. It’s going to be a tough game because they have all week to recover their energy and prepare,” he told reporters, according to Goal.

On the home support, he added:
“They supported the team for 95 minutes. We need them again on Saturday.”
What Paris did to City
PSG scored three times inside the opening 35 minutes through Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha, with Maghnes Akliouche adding a fourth after the break. Maresca made a triple change at half-time, and Erling Haaland pulled two back, glancing in a header from Iliman Ndiaye’s cross before slotting a second. It was not enough.
The exposed phase was the first half, when Luis Enrique’s team pressed City into mistakes and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was not even needed from the start.

Foden available after Anfield ban
Phil Foden is available again after serving the final game of a three-match domestic ban at Anfield last weekend, and City have no fresh injury concerns. Rayan Cherki, substituted at half-time in Paris, is not expected to start, with Matheus Nunes likely to return at right-back and Nico O’Reilly coming in for Josko Gvardiol.
Gianluigi Donnarumma will keep goal; Haaland will lead the line. Beyond that, Maresca is expected to freshen several positions after the midweek exertions.
Ipswich arrive in form
Ipswich sit 10th with nine points from six matches and arrive in Manchester off a late 2-1 comeback win over Fulham. Three wins from six is their best Premier League start since 1993-94, though the defensive numbers tell a different story: they have failed to keep a clean sheet in 25 league games running, conceding 62 goals in that stretch.
Their last away league win over City came in November 2000. Abdul Fatawu returns from a one-match ban; Jack Taylor’s knee injury rules him out.
