Spurs enter a complicated race

Marcus Rashford’s future is again uncertain after the end of his loan spell at Barcelona, with Tottenham Hotspur now among the clubs monitoring the Manchester United forward.

The 28-year-old spent last season at Camp Nou and made a respectable impression, but Barcelona chose not to turn the deal into a permanent transfer. That has left United searching for a buyer and Rashford facing another summer of uncertainty.

According to Manchester Evening News, Rashford’s preference remains a move away from Old Trafford, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich among the destinations linked with the England international.

Tottenham’s interest adds a domestic option to the picture. Roberto De Zerbi’s side need attacking reinforcements after a difficult Premier League season, and Rashford’s pace, experience and ability to play from the left or through the middle make him an obvious fit on paper.

United want a sale, not another loan

The key issue is the structure of any deal. United are expected to push for a permanent sale, rather than another temporary exit.

According to iNews, Tottenham are interested in Rashford but are reluctant to meet United’s valuation. The £40m figure should be understood as a price United have previously been prepared to accept, linked to the option Aston Villa held during his 2025 loan spell, rather than a release clause written into Rashford’s United contract.

That distinction matters. United can negotiate, but they are unlikely to be enthusiastic about a low offer when Rashford still has two years left on his deal and remains a player with major commercial and footballing value.

Rashford’s wages are another factor. He is one of United’s highest earners, and removing his salary from the books would give the club more freedom in the market. But any buying club will also need to make the financial package work for the player.

Barcelona door narrows

Rashford’s first choice has long been Barcelona. The move to Spain offered him a fresh start after a strained end to his time under Ruben Amorim at United, and his performances were strong enough to keep the conversation alive.

As reported by Sky Sports, Rashford joined Barcelona on loan for the 2025/26 season in a deal that included an option to buy worth around £26m.

He finished the campaign with 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances. That was a solid return, but not enough to convince Barcelona to activate the clause.

According to Sports Mole, Barcelona decided against signing Rashford permanently, with the arrival of Anthony Gordon one of the factors complicating his route back to Camp Nou.

A second loan has been mentioned, but that would do little for United unless it included a clear obligation to buy. For now, Barcelona’s interest appears softer than Rashford’s desire to return.

De Zerbi needs more firepower

Tottenham’s case is different. They can offer Premier League football, a leading role and a manager who wants more proven attacking quality.

As confirmed by Tottenham Hotspur, De Zerbi was appointed earlier this year with a brief to rebuild the team and restore momentum after a turbulent period. Spurs have already strengthened defensively, but the forward line still needs more edge.

Rashford would bring direct running, transition threat and experience at the highest level. He would also arrive with something to prove.

The question is whether he wants that challenge in England. Rashford has previously leaned towards a move abroad, partly because a transfer to another Premier League club would carry emotional weight after his long association with United.

Rashford’s England focus remains clear

For now, Rashford is with England at the World Cup, and his club future is likely to remain unresolved until later in the window.

That may suit all sides. United can wait for the market to develop, Tottenham can test whether the price drops, and Rashford can use the tournament to remind clubs of his quality.

His position is stronger than it was a year ago. The Barcelona spell did not end in a permanent deal, but it repaired some of the damage done during the final months of his United career. He showed he could still produce in a major European side, and that matters.

What happens next depends on whether a club is willing to meet United’s demands and Rashford’s ambitions. Tottenham are in the race, but unless the numbers change, or Rashford changes his mind about staying in England, this remains a deal with more complications than momentum.
