Strasbourg captain makes candid admission about life under Chelsea’s owners

Ismaël Doukouré’s quiet acknowledgement that his new team-mates do not all share a language has pulled Chelsea’s multi-club project back into view at exactly the point its French arm is…

Ismaël Doukouré is one of the longest-serving players in Hugo Oliveira’s Strasbourg squad, and when the captain was asked how a dressing room reshaped by a wholesale summer rebuild was holding together, he did not pretend everything had been seamless.

“At the start, it’s definitely a bit more complicated, because there are players who speak different languages,” he told Alsa’Sports ahead of Sunday’s Ligue 1 home fixture with Auxerre.

Doukouré framed integration as a senior-player job and said the veterans had taken it on themselves to open up, speak with the newcomers and bring them closer in. It is standard captain’s talk. It is also an unusually candid description of what happens inside a club whose summer recruitment is routed through the ownership network that owns it.

The pipeline between London and Alsace

Strasbourg sit inside BlueCo, the Clearlake Capital-led consortium that bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in May 2022 for £4.25bn and added the French club in June 2023 for a reported €75m. The structure has produced a near-constant flow of players between the two squads, with Chelsea sending younger or fringe signings to Alsace to accumulate Ligue 1 minutes.

That operating logic, one owner, two squads, one pipeline, was tightened in September, when Clearlake bought out Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in a deal valued at around £950m. Boehly stepped down as chairman after four years, and Clearlake, in partnership with Hansjörg Wyss, now holds unambiguous control of both clubs.

For Strasbourg, that control has already been visible on the training pitch. Hugo Oliveira, appointed in July 2026 on a three-year contract after Gary O’Neil’s move to Ipswich Town, was taken on partly for a profile that included working across Portuguese, Spanish, English and French, a useful toolkit for a squad whose captain has just confirmed that language is a live issue.

A model that is already testing the fans

The practical cost of BlueCo’s pipeline is not new to Strasbourg’s supporters. The ultra group Ultra Boys 90 has run silent 15-minute match protests against a structure they argue has turned a historic club into a feeder operation, and they have accused the owners of failing to deliver on promised talks.

Doukouré’s remarks give that argument an inside voice, even if the captain did not frame it that way. His point was that the group is now coming together, that the mentality is improving, and that he saw the same signs two years ago.
