Manchester United were two goals down at the break and chasing the match when Michael Carrick turned to his 19-year-old winger. Fifteen minutes later, Shea Lacey had set up the goal that won it.

The academy graduate replaced Amad Diallo and slid a pass into the penalty area for Matheus Cunha to fire in United’s third in the 86th minute. Cunha had already pulled one back three minutes earlier, and Bruno Fernandes’s second-half penalty had reopened the tie after Matias Soulé and Donyell Malen scored inside the opening 20 minutes at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

By the time the whistle went, Lacey had completed three of four dribbles, won five of six ground duels and delivered the match-winning assist in a quarter of an hour on the pitch, according to SportBible.

Lacey posted a photo alongside Cunha after the final whistle. The Brazilian wrote underneath: “It shows how much I believe in you.” Captain Bruno Fernandes left a two-word comment on the same post: “My kid.”

A sour end for Cunha

Cunha’s brace carried the comeback, but the Brazilian did not see the final whistle. He was sent off late on for a second yellow card.

Carrick would not fault him for the dismissal.
