Sébastien Desabre had just watched DR Congo come close to one of the great shocks of the World Cup.

His side had pushed England to the limit before losing 2-1, with Harry Kane scoring twice late on to end a brave Congolese run. The sporting disappointment was heavy enough on its own.

Then came something far more painful.

At the end of the post-match press conference, Desabre was left visibly stunned as the death of his father was announced in front of the room.

A brutal end to a painful night

According to A Bola, the moment came after DR Congo’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup following the 2-1 defeat to England.

The Congolese team had been close to reaching the round of 16, but were caught in the final minutes. Kane’s late double turned the match around and sent England through.

Desabre had still been composed enough to speak to the media after the game. Then, when there were no more questions, the team’s press officer took the microphone.

“No more questions? Thank you. We announce that the coach has lost his father. Sincere condolences,” the press officer said.

A moment of shock

The cameras stayed on Desabre.

A Bola described the French coach as looking shocked and surprised, with a strained expression as the announcement was made. The outlet also noted that it was not entirely clear whether he learned of his father’s death at that exact moment, although that was the impression left by the scene.

Desabre did not offer a long response.

Visibly affected, he simply said “thank you” before getting up and leaving the room.

It was a sudden and deeply human moment, cutting through the usual language of tactics, missed chances and tournament exits.

More than a football defeat

The result had already hurt DR Congo.

They had taken England close and had looked capable of producing a historic World Cup result. Instead, the match slipped away late, leaving the players and staff to deal with the frustration of an opportunity lost.

For Desabre, the night became something else entirely.

A coach can explain a defeat. He can speak about substitutions, pressure and small margins. But there was no way to put this moment into football language.

His team’s World Cup had ended. At almost the same time, he was confronted with a personal loss that made the result feel smaller.

A reminder of the person behind the job

Desabre has been one of the central figures in DR Congo’s rise.

He guided the team through a World Cup campaign that restored pride and brought the country back into the global conversation. Even in defeat, the performance against England showed how far the team had come.

But the final image of his tournament will not be tactical.

It will be the sight of a coach sitting in front of the media, hearing devastating family news in a room built for football questions.

Sport often turns managers into symbols of pressure and responsibility. This was a reminder that behind the role is a person, carrying private pain even in the most public setting.

DR Congo’s World Cup is over.

For Desabre, the hardest part of the night had nothing to do with the final score.
