Football legend Thierry Henry found himself at the centre of a social media storm following a light-hearted, yet pointed, exchange with presenter Reshmin Chowdhury during the Champions League league phase draw. The former Arsenal star, who was conducting the draw, delivered a jibe about Tottenham Hotspur’s trophy cabinet that quickly went viral.
Prior to his role in the draw, Henry was honoured with the UEFA President’s Award, an accolade recognizing exemplary achievements both on and off the pitch. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin praised Henry’s “pace, grace, skill and ice-cold finishing,” while also highlighting his vocal advocacy against discrimination, racism, and mental health issues.
The viral exchange on stage
The moment that captured widespread attention occurred when Chowdhury, a known Tottenham fan, engaged Henry in a brief banter. After a comment from Chowdhury, Henry quickly retorted, “I hope so. As you don’t touch any trophies, as you already know. She’s a Spurs fan.”
The comment, aimed directly at Chowdhury and her club affiliation, drew a mixed reaction in the live audience, reportedly not landing well with those present. Chowdhury, visibly taken aback, responded with a playful “How could you do this to me on stage again?” The exchange, however, quickly gained traction online.

Social media erupts
Almost immediately after the interaction, clips of Henry’s comment began circulating widely on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter). Fans reacted with a mix of amusement and disbelief, with many referencing Henry’s established reputation as a pundit, notably on CBS Sports where he provides Champions League analysis.
One unnamed football fan on X commented, “Bro thought he was on CBS,” alluding to Henry’s often candid and humorous style on the American broadcast. Another simply stated, “He was wild for that, lmao,” while others expressed their admiration for the former striker, with one fan declaring, “I love Henry.”
The Champions League league phase is set to commence on September 8 and will run until January 27, culminating in the final on June 5, 2027, at Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium.
