A brief post-match interaction involving Unai Simón has gone viral after supporters used it to mock Argentina’s attacking performance in the World Cup final.

The footage appeared to show the Spain goalkeeper greeting members of the Argentina squad following his country’s 1-0 extra-time victory in New Jersey.

A post shared by the Football Tweet account on X joked that the exchange was the first time the Argentine players had seen Simón during the entire 120 minutes.

It was an obvious exaggeration, but one grounded in an extraordinary statistic: Argentina completed the final without registering a single shot on target.

The joke carried an uncomfortable truth

Spain controlled possession and territory for long periods, while Argentina concentrated almost entirely on protecting their own penalty area.

Lionel Scaloni’s team remained compact and attempted to disrupt Spain’s rhythm, but the approach left Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez isolated at the other end of the pitch.

According to The Guardian’s minute-by-minute report from the final, Argentina did not produce their first recognised attempt until the 117th minute. Messi collected the ball outside the area and struck a shot into Mikel Merino rather than towards Simón’s goal.

The goalkeeper was not entirely a spectator. He raced well outside his penalty area to intercept a pass intended for Messi in the opening minutes and later collected a cross during second-half stoppage time.

He was never, however, required to make a conventional save.

Spain kept Argentina away from goal

The difference between the two teams was reflected throughout the match.

As described by The Times, Spain had recorded 22 touches in the opposition penalty area while Argentina had managed only one during the latter stages of normal time. Messi had also been limited to just 20 touches as his team struggled to build sustained attacks.

Argentina became slightly more adventurous only after Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute.

Messi sent a cross onto the roof of the net in the 115th minute before his first shot was blocked two minutes later. Giuliano Simeone then drove a dangerous ball across the penalty area and later fired over from a promising position.

Those late moments caused Spain some concern, but none resulted in an effort that Simón was required to save.

Simón ends tournament with another clean sheet

The final completed an outstanding World Cup for the Athletic Club goalkeeper.

Spain conceded only once across the tournament, while Simón kept a clean sheet in the final and received the Golden Glove as the competition’s leading goalkeeper. His role extended beyond saves, with his positioning allowing Spain’s defensive line to remain high and compress the space available to opponents.

The viral joke therefore captured only part of the story. Argentina rarely threatened his goal, but Simón’s willingness to leave his penalty area also helped ensure that several promising situations never developed into shots.

Spain eventually secured their second men’s World Cup title through Torres’s extra-time goal. Argentina, meanwhile, finished the most important match of the tournament without testing the opposition goalkeeper once.

For a team led by Messi and carrying ambitions of retaining the trophy, that statistic provided social media with a punchline that was difficult to resist.
