Jonas Vingegaard’s dramatic departure from the 2026 Tour de France has transformed the battle for the podium.
Tadej Pogačar is five minutes clear at the top of the general classification and appears on course for a fifth Tour victory. Behind him, however, only one minute and 48 seconds separate Remco Evenepoel in second from Florian Lipowitz in fifth.
Vingegaard had been Pogačar’s closest challenger before crashing around 20 kilometres from the finish of Sunday’s 15th stage. His team subsequently confirmed that the Danish rider had fractured his collarbone and would require surgery, according to Reuters’ report published by CNA.
“I’m really sad to see Jonas crash out. Without him the Tour will not be the same,” Pogačar said, as quoted by the Associated Press.

“We go back a long way.”
Four riders chasing two places
The general classification after stage 15 reads:
- Tadej Pogačar, UAE Team Emirates-XRG
- Remco Evenepoel, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, +5:00
- Isaac del Toro, UAE Team Emirates-XRG, +5:58
- Paul Seixas, Decathlon CMA CGM, +6:23
- Florian Lipowitz, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, +6:48
Evenepoel is the best placed of the four challengers and could strengthen his position in the race’s 26.1-kilometre individual time trial between Évian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains.
The Belgian is one of the discipline’s leading specialists, while the course includes 500 metres of climbing and a long, technical descent. It could provide Evenepoel with an opportunity to create a more comfortable margin before the race returns to the high mountains, as outlined in the official Tour de France stage profile.

Evenepoel also enters the time trial with renewed confidence after winning stage 15 at Plateau de Solaison. He resisted two late attacks from Del Toro before beating Pogačar in the sprint for the line.
The result moved him into second overall, but his uneven performances earlier in the race mean that the position is far from secure.
Pogačar could hold the key
Del Toro is only 58 seconds behind Evenepoel and received valuable support from Pogačar on the final climb to Plateau de Solaison.
Rather than attacking for another stage victory, the yellow jersey set the pace for his UAE teammate, helping Del Toro move onto the provisional podium. Both TV 2 Sport experts Lars Bak and Emil Axelgaard expect the Mexican to finish second, with Evenepoel taking third.

Seixas remains another serious threat. The 19-year-old Frenchman is only 25 seconds behind Del Toro, although there are questions over how he will cope with the accumulated fatigue of his first Tour de France.
Lipowitz is a further 25 seconds back. His presence gives Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe two riders in the top five, potentially creating a difficult tactical balance between protecting Evenepoel and allowing the German to pursue his own podium ambitions.
The final week contains three further Alpine stages, including consecutive finishes on Alpe d’Huez. Those climbs are likely to prove more decisive than the current time gaps.
“It is difficult to call. It is wide open. It really is one of the most fascinating battles for the podium,” Axelgaard told TV 2 Sport.
