Xavi opens up on Barcelona’s failed Messi, Neymar and Pedro returns

Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández has shed new light on the club’s attempts to bring back several former stars, revealing how financial strain and internal decisions derailed those plans.

In comments reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Xavi said he pushed for multiple high-profile returns during his time in charge at Camp Nou.

“As Barça manager I brought back Dani Alves… and tried to bring Neymar, Pedro and Messi back as well,” he said.

Financial Limits Halted Key Moves

While Alves did rejoin the club briefly in 2021, similar moves for Neymar and Pedro never materialized. Xavi made clear that Barcelona’s economic situation at the time left little room for maneuver.

“Pedro and Neymar couldn’t be signed because of the economic situation,” he said.

Barcelona were operating under strict La Liga salary limits and dealing with significant debt, forcing the club to prioritize cost-cutting over ambitious transfers.

Messi Return Was Not Pursued

Xavi also addressed the possibility of Lionel Messi returning to Barcelona, suggesting the decision ultimately rested with club president Joan Laporta rather than finances alone.

“For Leo Messi, the president Laporta didn’t want him back,” he said.

Messi, who left the club in 2021 before joining Paris Saint-Germain, had been linked with a return, particularly in 2023, but no deal was reached.

The remarks highlight the tension Barcelona faced during Xavi’s tenure—caught between the emotional appeal of reuniting with former icons and the financial reality of rebuilding the squad.
