José Bordalás, widely considered the most successful coach in Getafe CF’s history, is set to leave the club when his contract expires on June 30. His departure stems from the Spanish club’s long-standing delicate financial situation and persistent salary cap problems, which have created an unsustainable environment for the veteran manager.
Bordalás had been offered a contract renewal until 2028 last summer but ultimately declined, citing the club’s inability to provide the necessary resources.
The financial constraints have severely impacted squad building, with Bordalás lamenting the lack of minimum needs, particularly in attack.
Last summer, Getafe was forced to inscribe six new signings on the final day of the transfer window, having previously had six free roster spots due to salary cap issues. “We urgently need signings,” Bordalás stated in press conferences throughout the season, reflecting his frustration.

The professional relationship between Bordalás and President Ángel Torres has reportedly deteriorated due to these economic challenges, despite a strong personal bond.
Following his departure, Bordalás, who recently changed his representation agency to YouFirst, has already been linked with other clubs, including Crystal Palace this year.
The search for a successor: Celestini and Paunovic emerge
As Bordalás prepares to exit, Getafe has reportedly identified two primary candidates to take the helm, both with significant ties to the club. The leading option is Fabio Celestini, currently coaching CSKA Moscow, where he is under contract until June 2027.
Celestini is no stranger to Getafe, having played for the club between 2005 and 2010 during a successful period that saw them reach two Copa del Rey finals and compete in Europe. This emotional connection is evident, with Celestini telling Radio MARCA, “It’s my home, I have affection for it,” regarding the possibility of coaching the team. Getafe‘s president, Ángel Torres, is known to hold a strong belief in Celestini’s capabilities.

Contacts have already been made with the Swiss coach, and an agreement for him to terminate his contract with CSKA Moscow, where the team currently sits sixth in the Russian League, is reportedly pending.
The alternative candidate is Veljko Paunovic, the current coach of the Serbian national team. Paunovic’s contract with the Serbian Federation includes a unique clause allowing him to leave for a club with emotional ties.
His connection to Getafe is through his son, Petar, who plays in the club’s youth categories. President Torres is also a known admirer of Paunovic, having reportedly expressed in his closest circles that “if I continue at Getafe, one day he will coach the team.”
Getafe faces a pivotal summer as it navigates a coaching change driven by financial realities, seeking a leader who can both understand the club’s limitations and inspire its future.
