Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres has underlined the immense opportunity facing the club as they prepare for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
With the tie finely poised at 1-1 after the first leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the Gunners are just 90 minutes away from a place in European football’s showpiece final.
This marks the second consecutive season Arsenal has reached this advanced stage of the competition, highlighting their consistent presence among Europe’s elite.
Gyokeres, who found the net from the penalty spot in the first leg after a foul by David Hancko before Julian Alvarez equalized for Atletico Madrid, reflected on the team’s journey and the critical nature of the upcoming fixture.

“We are in this position now for a reason,” Gyokeres stated, according to VAVEL. “We’ve done well throughout the season, but of course now with these games that are coming, it’s when comes down to and everything matters to do well in these games to get us over the line. It’s been incredible so far what we’ve done. But we have to do it now.”
His words underscore a recognition of the progress made, coupled with the immediate demand for peak performance.
Leveraging the Emirates advantage
The decisive second leg will see Arsenal enjoy home advantage at the Emirates Stadium, a factor Gyokeres believes could be pivotal. “It’s amazing to play this game at home,” he commented. “We know what’s at stake and of course we have an amazing opportunity to have a great game and to enjoy it with the fans. But we have to do it on the pitch and of course with their amazing support, I think that it can be a great night.”
Despite the home backing, Gyokeres acknowledges the formidable challenge posed by their Spanish opponents, noting Atletico Madrid‘s “great team” and “a lot of attacking quality.” Arsenal will need to balance their offensive strengths with defensive solidity against a dangerous side.

A season of personal growth
For Gyokeres, his debut season with Arsenal has been one of significant personal development. He has been in impressive scoring form this year, contributing crucial goals, including his penalty against Atletico.
Beyond his club commitments, Gyokeres also played a key role in helping Sweden qualify for this summer’s World Cup, showcasing his prowess on the international stage. His recent form, including Arsenal‘s comfortable 3-0 victory over Fulham last week, provides a strong foundation as the team prepares for their biggest test yet.
As the Gunners stand on the precipice of a Champions League final, Gyokeres’s message is clear: the opportunity is immense, the challenge is significant, and the time to deliver is now.
The Emirates faithful will be expecting a memorable night as Arsenal seeks to write another chapter in their European history.
