The deadline for Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad looms, an intense battle for the No. 10 role is being discussed. Chelsea‘s Cole Palmer and Nottingham Forest‘s Morgan Gibbs-White are locked in a direct contest, set to culminate in a pivotal face-off at Stamford Bridge tonight (Monday the 4th of May) .

The North American World Cup presents a unique challenge, and Tuchel’s decision for the creative midfield spot could hinge on the upcoming Premier League encounter, as well as the players’ recent form and fitness.

Palmer’s injury and flashes of brilliance

Cole Palmer’s season has been a stop-start affair, marred by a series of debilitating injuries. He has grappled with a chronic groin issue (pubalgia), suffered a broken toe in winter, and was recently sidelined with a hamstring problem in April. Reports suggest former head coach Enzo Maresca’s alleged overuse of Palmer in the first half of the campaign may have contributed to his physical struggles.

Despite these setbacks, Palmer has displayed undeniable quality. He netted a memorable hat-trick against Wolves in February and has reached double figures for goals across all competitions this season, including nine in the Premier League (five penalties). This impressive output has come in the equivalent of just 17 matches (1,606 minutes).

However, his fitness has consistently hampered his national team availability. Palmer missed three England camps (six games) in the first half of the season due to his groin issue and only made one appearance under Tuchel before March – a 65-minute outing against Andorra. His recent hamstring problem saw him miss a 3-0 defeat to Brighton and limited him to a 20-minute cameo in the FA Cup semi-final win over Leeds.

Having earned five caps since his goal in the Euro 2024 final, Palmer remains a strong contender, particularly given Tuchel’s previous praise for his unique ability. In early April, Palmer expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, “I feel good, feel like I’ve turned a corner. I can finally shoot again and do everything now, so just about kicking on and performing.”

Gibbs-White’s surge for contention

In stark contrast to Palmer’s injury-hit campaign, Morgan Gibbs-White is enjoying a sensational run of form. He stands as the Premier League’s joint top-scorer so far in 2026 with 10 goals, seven of which have come since the start of March. His recent contributions have been crucial for Nottingham Forest

Despite his club form, Gibbs-White’s England career under Tuchel has been limited. He has been called upon three times but has yet to start a game, accumulating just 65 minutes across four appearances. His last cap was in October 2025, and he was omitted from the November camp.

Past reports from last summer, as detailed by GOAL, indicated that Tuchel and his staff harboured reservations about Gibbs-White’s temperament, ball retention, and suitability for the heat conditions expected in North America. During the March international window, Tuchel laid down a clear challenge for the Forest midfielder.

“Honestly, he has to show it because we have more evidence without him than with him so the pressure is on him,” Tuchel said. “He had a difficult season but he has also had a difficult spell with the national team. He was only once available for us and when he was available, we decided to stick with the same squad so there is big competition for his best position, number 10.”

While Eberechi Eze, Jude Bellingham, and the impressive Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa) are also in contention, and Phil Foden reportedly struggling for form, the direct clash between Palmer and Gibbs-White could be decisive. As BBC reported, it would still require “something special” or a number of injuries for Gibbs-White to secure his spot, but his current trajectory suggests he might just deliver it.
