The perennial debate over who holds the title of Formula 1’s Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) continues to spark discussion, with Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher often at the forefront, both boasting a record seven World Championships. Recently, Haas drivers Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman offered their perspectives on the challenging question, revealing differing opinions on how to assess greatness across eras.
Ocon champions Hamilton for the modern era
Esteban Ocon, who grew up idolizing Michael Schumacher, acknowledged the immense achievements of Lewis Hamilton. While Schumacher was his childhood hero and the catalyst for his love of the sport, Ocon believes Hamilton stands out in contemporary F1.
“No one has achieved what Lewis [Hamilton] has achieved. So obviously, you know, he’s one of the best ever,” Ocon stated, as reported by SPORTbible. “But it’s difficult to compare all the eras. So, he is one of the top guys, that’s for sure. You know, I grew up with watching Michael [Schumacher], who was my hero and the one who gave me the love for the sport, and, you know, it’s difficult to compare, you know, Lewis with Michael, for example. They’ve raced at some point at the same time, but not really in the same era, not with the same cars. So yeah, you have to rate Lewis as one of the best ever and, for sure, the best ever for the modern era.”
Bearman highlights the challenge of comparison
Ollie Bearman echoed Ocon’s sentiment regarding the difficulty of comparing drivers from different periods. He highlighted how technological advancements and varying regulations make direct comparisons almost impossible, suggesting that each era produced its own dominant figures.

Bearman listed several legendary names as contenders for the GOAT title, including Juan Manuel Fangio, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and even current sensation Max Verstappen. He specifically praised Fangio’s dominance in his own time.
“I would also go to agree because, like Esteban said, you can’t compare, you know,” Bearman told SPORTbible. “You have the people like Fangio from the very beginning. He dominated back then. You have Senna, who’s widely regarded as the best. Schumacher as well. Hamilton, Vettel. Max [Verstappen], even, of nowadays. I think they all had their times when they were the best. You can’t compare, you know. Fangio, probably if you put him in a current car, he would be nowhere near us, but if we tried to drive his car, we would be nowhere near him, you know? That’s for sure. Nowhere, nowhere even close, so of his era, I think he is definitely the best.”
Both Haas drivers ultimately agreed that while Lewis Hamilton’s achievements are undeniable, the ever-evolving nature of Formula 1 makes naming a single GOAT an incredibly complex, if not impossible, task.
