Just days after being named in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, iconic forward Neymar has suffered a calf injury, raising immediate concerns about his fitness for the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The 34-year-old, who has not featured for the national team since an ACL injury in October 2023, was selected by coach Carlo Ancelotti after a diligent recovery period at his boyhood club, Santos. This latest setback, described as an edema, has put a temporary halt to his preparations.
Minor setback for Brazil’s star
Despite the timing, medical staff at Santos remain optimistic about Neymar’s swift return. Rodrigo Zogaib, Santos’ head of medical, downplayed the severity of the issue, confirming the injury is not expected to be long-term.
“Neymar has a minor calf injury, an edema,” Zogaib told TalkSport. “But, according to our planning, his progress will allow him to be fit next week when he will join up with the national team.”

The injury means Neymar is set to miss upcoming Santos games, but the expectation is that he will link up with the national squad as planned next week. Brazil, a record five-time World Cup winner, will be keen to have their star player fully fit as they eye another global triumph.
Ancelotti’s tough selection call
Neymar’s inclusion in the squad was not without controversy, particularly as it meant Chelsea forward Joao Pedro missed out. Pedro enjoyed a standout debut season for the Premier League club, making a strong case for national team recognition.

“Of course, we are sad for Joao Pedro,” Ancelotti stated. “For the season he had in Europe, he probably deserved to be on this list, but unfortunately, with all possible awareness and respect, we chose another player. I feel very sorry for Joao Pedro and all the others.”
Joao Pedro is reportedly considered a top option for any standby list, highlighting the fine margins involved in Ancelotti’s selections. For Neymar, the 2026 World Cup represents a significant opportunity, potentially his last, to add an international honour with Brazil to his illustrious career.
