NewcastleWorld has reported that Anthony Gordon is close to completing a high-profile move from Newcastle United to Barcelona in a deal worth around £69 million (€80 million). According to the report, Everton are set to receive approximately £3.6 million through a 15% sell-on clause included when Gordon joined Newcastle in January 2023.
Financial windfall for Everton
The intricacies of the agreement mean Everton is set to bank a seven-figure sum thanks to a sell-on clause inserted into Gordon’s initial transfer from Goodison Park to St. James’ Park in January 2023. Newcastle had paid £45 million for the winger, and with Barcelona’s offer reaching approximately £69.3 million, the Magpies stand to make a profit of £24 million. Of this profit, Everton is entitled to 15%, which translates to around £3.6 million heading back to Merseyside. Newcastle United, meanwhile, will walk away with a net profit of £20.4 million from the transaction, as reported by Jordan Cronin.
The move comes after weeks of speculation that saw Bayern Munich as a likely destination for Gordon, though their offer ultimately fell short of Newcastle’s valuation. Talks between Barcelona and Newcastle progressed rapidly on Wednesday, culminating in the agreement.
A stellar season at St. James’ Park
Gordon spent three-and-a-half years with Newcastle, initially taking six months to fully acclimatise to manager Eddie Howe’s system. His full first season, however, was a resounding success, earning him the club’s Player of the Year award. During his tenure, Gordon made 152 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 39 goals in total. This season alone, a notable 10 of his goals came in the Champions League, showcasing his impact on the European stage.

His recent availability has been hampered by a hip injury, causing him to miss Newcastle’s final six games, including crucial fixtures against AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal. Prior to this, he was an unused substitute in four other matches against Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, and Fulham.
Commenting on Gordon’s recent omission from the squad, Eddie Howe had previously offered a cryptic explanation, stating it was due to a “partial view on the future.” This statement now appears to have foreshadowed the imminent transfer. Gordon is scheduled to undergo his medical in Barcelona on Thursday, signalling the final stages of his move to La Liga.
