According to GOAL, Liverpool decided to sack Arne Slot following a disappointing second season in charge, bringing an end to a tumultuous period that saw the club suffer one of the worst Premier League title defences in history. The decision, confirmed by the club via their X.com account, came despite initial reports from journalists with close club ties rubbishing rumours of Slot’s departure before the season’s final game.

Slot, who had led Liverpool to a Premier League title in his debut 2024-25 season, presided over a subsequent campaign marked by a dramatic decline. The team endured its worst run of results in 71 years, consistently leaking goals from set-pieces and being vulnerable in transition. This defensive fragility became a hallmark of their struggles towards the tail end of the season, culminating in a dismal draw with Brentford that saw them scrape into the Champions League only due to an extra place assigned to the Premier League.

The internal atmosphere at Anfield reportedly deteriorated significantly, with the dressing room described as being in a “very bad place” during the final months. Incidents like Curtis Jones barely celebrating what was likely his final goal for the club against Brentford, and Virgil van Dijk sitting visibly bewildered on the Anfield turf after the same match, painted a clear picture of a squad in disarray. Even star forward Mohamed Salah publicly lamented the team’s shift away from what he termed “heavy metal football” for a more conservative approach, undermining Slot’s credibility.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was scathing in his assessment of Slot’s side, describing Liverpool as “an easy team to play against.” The fans’ trust also eroded, evidenced by boos for Slot’s decision to substitute Rio Ngumoha during a draw with Chelsea.

Missed opportunity and the call for Iraola

The club’s ownership has faced criticism for perceived inaction, particularly for not pursuing Xabi Alonso. Alonso had become available after being sacked by Real Madrid just 12 days before Liverpool’s damaging 1-0 loss to Bournemouth on January 24, a result that followed four consecutive Premier League draws and highlighted the team’s deepening crisis.

With Slot now gone, attention has quickly turned to Andoni Iraola as a potential successor. Iraola, despite being approached by AC Milan earlier this week, remains available and is highly regarded in coaching circles. He shares a significant connection with Liverpool’s club official Richard Hughes, who was instrumental in bringing Iraola to Bournemouth. Under Iraola’s guidance, Bournemouth achieved a historic sixth-place finish in the Premier League, securing European qualification for the first time ever.

Iraola’s reputation for maximizing resources and implementing an attractive, attacking style of football aligns with the expectations of Liverpool supporters yearning for a return to their former glory. As Liverpool embarks on a new managerial search following an in-house season review that contributed to Slot’s dismissal, the call for Iraola is growing louder among those who believe he can revitalize a squad that appeared to have lost its way.
