Azerbaijani club PFK Turan Tovuz has been banned from participating in next season’s UEFA Conference League following a UEFA disciplinary ruling linked to a historical match-fixing case, according to SPORTbible.
Historical integrity breach leads to ban
The disciplinary action against PFK Turan Tovuz relates to a match-fixing scandal from 2019, which saw seven players suspended by the country’s football federation, AFFA. Despite securing a European berth by finishing third in the 2025/26 Azerbaijan Premier League, the club’s continental aspirations have been halted. PFK Turan Tovuz, who last competed in Europe during the 1994/95 season, has confirmed its intention to appeal UEFA’s ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
This decision underscores UEFA’s commitment to upholding sporting integrity, echoing previous instances of strict enforcement. In 2026, Crystal Palace were demoted to the Conference League from the Europa League after UEFA found they had breached multi-club ownership rules due to links with Lyon. Crystal Palace went on to win the Conference League that year, defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in Leipzig under manager Oliver Glasner.
Azerbaijani European spots reshuffled
The ban on PFK Turan Tovuz creates a significant shift in Azerbaijan’s European qualification landscape for the upcoming season. The other Azerbaijani clubs have secured their places as follows:

- Sabah: Finished first in the Azerbaijan Premier League and won the Azerbaijan Cup, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
- Qarabag: Finished second in the Azerbaijan Premier League, earning a spot in the Europa League.
- Neftchi: Finished fourth in the Azerbaijan Premier League and has already secured a Conference League spot.
With PFK Turan Tovuz’s third-place finish no longer valid for European competition, Zira, who finished fifth in the Azerbaijan Premier League, is now the primary candidate to inherit the vacant Conference League place.
Zira awaits official confirmation
While the prospect of European football looms, Zira is maintaining a cautious stance. Speaking to İdman.Biz, Zira press secretary Elmar Abdullazade expressed the club’s position:
“At the moment, all of Zira’s plans are focused on preparations for the new Azerbaijan Premier League season. We have not received any official communication. Honestly, we have never experienced a situation where a club participates in European competitions instead of another team. I believe we will receive official notification from AFFA or UEFA first, and only then will it be possible to discuss the matter in more detail.”
The situation remains fluid as PFK Turan Tovuz prepares its appeal to CAS, with Zira’s European fate hanging in the balance pending official confirmation from UEFA or AFFA.
