Referees selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are set to receive an unprecedented $100,000 each for their involvement in the tournament, a figure that roughly doubles the pay officials earned at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. This significant increase comes as FIFA prepares for an expanded 48-team format, a record 104 matches, and a host of new rule changes designed to streamline play and enhance VAR’s influence.

The substantial remuneration reflects the increased scrutiny and demands placed on officials, with FIFA aiming to attract and retain the very best. For many, the World Cup presents a unique financial opportunity, potentially allowing them to exceed an entire season’s earnings in just five weeks.

Record remuneration for officials

The $100,000 payment, reported by The Times, is a base figure, with referees retained for the knockout rounds earning additional sums at each successive stage. The official ultimately handed the final on July 19th will receive the largest payout.

Among the officials selected are two prominent Premier League referees, Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor. Both have already earned approximately £250,000 this season from their duties across the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League matches. Premier League officials typically earn between £170,000 and £180,000 annually, including match fees and bonuses, highlighting the financial incentive of the World Cup.

Australian official Jarred Gillett, also a familiar face in the Premier League, will attend the tournament in a specialist VAR capacity. The officiating infrastructure for 2026 will be the largest in World Cup history, comprising:

  • 52 referees
  • 88 assistant referees
  • 30 VAR officials

Expanded VAR powers and new match protocols

Alongside the record pay, FIFA is introducing a raft of rule changes for the 2026 tournament, significantly expanding VAR’s powers and implementing new match protocols aimed at improving game flow and discipline. According to GiveMeSport, the expanded VAR capabilities include:

  • The power to overturn a corner if it was incorrectly awarded.
  • The ability to review red cards issued for a second yellow card offense.
  • The power to intervene and disallow goals for a foul by an attacking player even before the ball has crossed the line.

Other new match protocols are designed to reduce time-wasting and enhance player conduct:

  • Substitutes will be required to leave the pitch within ten seconds of being replaced.
  • Any player who goes off for treatment will have to remain off the pitch for a full minute before being allowed to return.
  • A five-second countdown will be enforced for throw-ins and goal kicks.
  • Players who cover their mouths during confrontations with officials risk immediate dismissal.

These changes underscore FIFA’s commitment to modernizing the game and ensuring a high standard of officiating for the largest World Cup to date.
