As Trump appeared on the arena’s jumbotron, a loud wave of boos could be heard from sections of the crowd. Trump later gave a different account of the moment, saying the reception was “mostly cheers” and describing the atmosphere as “amazing,” according to People’s report republished by Yahoo News.

Trump watched the game from a private suite and was joined by his granddaughter Kai Trump, the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr., along with several former administration officials. His appearance followed other high-profile sporting events where he has received a mixed or openly hostile response from spectators.

Security measures change the mood outside the arena

Trump’s attendance brought unusually tight security to one of the biggest nights in recent Knicks history. Madison Square Garden introduced a strict no-bag policy and screening procedures similar to those used at airports.

Outside the arena, the Secret Service and the NYPD also restricted fans from gathering around Madison Square Garden during the game. That marked a clear break from the scenes that had become common during the Knicks’ playoff run, when supporters regularly filled the surrounding streets before and during games.

Knicks lose a tight game 3

On the court, the Knicks were beaten 115-111 by the San Antonio Spurs in a game that shifted the tone of the series. The result ended New York’s unbeaten playoff run of more than a month and spoiled the team’s long-awaited return to a home NBA Finals game.

The night also produced a viral moment away from the action. Video shared online appeared to show Trump with his eyes closed during the game, prompting a sharp reaction from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who posted: “Wake TF up.”

Between the crowd’s reaction, the heavy security presence and the Knicks’ narrow defeat, Game 3 became about far more than basketball.
