With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, attention is already turning to which nation will lift football’s most coveted trophy. Opta Analyst’s latest tournament simulations provide an intriguing glimpse into the balance of power heading into the competition. While Spain top the rankings as favourites, several traditional giants and emerging challengers remain firmly in the hunt. From Mexico at No. 20 to Spain at No. 1, here are the teams Opta gives the best chance of becoming world champions.

20. Mexico

Mexico round out Opta’s top 20 favourites despite being one of the tournament’s co-hosts. El Tri have consistently qualified for the World Cup and remain one of the strongest sides in the CONCACAF region. However, recent performances against elite opposition suggest they still have ground to make up before they can seriously challenge for the title. Home support could give them an important boost, but Opta’s model gives them just a one percent chance of going all the way. A deep run would nevertheless be celebrated as a major achievement.

19. Senegal

Senegal continue to fly the flag for African football and have established themselves among the continent’s most competitive nations. The Lions of Teranga possess a squad filled with athleticism, experience and tactical discipline. They have consistently performed well in major tournaments over the last decade. Opta’s simulations give them a one percent chance of winning the World Cup, reflecting both their quality and the difficulty of competing against the traditional powers. Reaching the latter stages would represent another significant milestone.

18. United States

As one of the host nations, the United States will carry huge expectations into the tournament. The Americans boast one of the most talented generations in their history, with several key players competing in Europe’s top leagues. Their youthful energy and growing international experience make them an intriguing outsider. Opta assigns them a 1.2 percent chance of lifting the trophy. While winning the tournament remains unlikely, a quarter-final appearance would not be out of the question.
