The disturbing footage, circulated on social media and highlighted by SPORTbible, showed what appeared to be a Knicks fan trying to burn a Spurs jersey in the middle of the street. The outlet reported that the hostile environment surrounding the Knicks’ first home NBA Finals game since 1999 led to several heated confrontations throughout the city, with San Antonio supporters allegedly made to feel unwelcome.

As reported by SPORTbible, the situation escalated further following New York’s 115-111 loss to the Spurs in Game 3, a result that cut the Knicks’ series lead to 2-1. Additional videos shared online appeared to show the NYPD deploying pepper spray to break up altercations, while another clip showed a Spurs fan with a bloodied face after an apparent confrontation.

SPORTbible also noted that other videos depicted supporters running through the streets as projectiles were thrown in their direction. In total, authorities reportedly made more than 20 arrests in connection with fan-related incidents surrounding the game.

The atmosphere had already been tense before tip-off. According to SPORTbible, a planned Game 3 watch party at Madison Square Garden was moved to nearby Bryant Park because of increased security measures surrounding President Donald Trump’s attendance at the game.

Players from both teams have publicly condemned the apparent attacks on Spurs supporters. Speaking after the incidents, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama stressed the importance of respect in sport.

“My thoughts of course [are] that we can’t forget it’s a game. We’re just playing a game out there. I am all for passion, but [with] the respect of each other. It’s unacceptable,” Wembanyama stated, as quoted by SPORTbible.

Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns also called for calm and urged supporters to focus on the basketball itself.

“The game is built off of respect and passion. We want everyone to respect each other. We want everyone to enjoy basketball at its purest state. It’s the NBA finals. There’s no better place to watch basketball. Leave the physicality to everyone on the court,” Towns commented, according to SPORTbible.

The Knicks entered Game 3 carrying a 2-0 series lead and a three-game winning streak, but their home defeat and the subsequent scenes of fan unrest have cast a shadow over their long-awaited return to the NBA Finals stage.

With Game 4 set to take place in New York on Wednesday, SPORTbible reports that authorities are likely to face increased pressure to ensure supporter safety and prevent further incidents from overshadowing the series.
