Former Netherlands international and pundit Rafael van der Vaart has drawn significant criticism for remarks made during a World Cup broadcast, which have been widely perceived as racist towards Japanese players. The comments came during his analysis of a thrilling 2-2 draw between the Netherlands and Japan.

The match itself was a captivating affair, seeing the Netherlands take the lead through Virgil van Dijk. However, Japan quickly responded, with Keito Nakamura levelling the score. Crysencio Summerville then restored the Dutch advantage, only for Daichi Kamada to snatch an 89th-minute equalizer for Japan, ensuring the points were shared in a dramatic contest.

Punditry turns controversial

During his post-match analysis, Van der Vaart, a former Tottenham and Real Madrid midfielder, critiqued several aspects of the Dutch performance. He notably slammed Virgil van Dijk for turning “like a Boeing 747” during a defensive play. The punditry took a contentious turn when discussing Micky van de Ven’s defending during a corner kick that led to a Japanese opportunity. Van der Vaart initially detailed Van de Ven’s struggle to mark his man, Ogawa, who was left “completely free” to head the ball.

However, the conversation quickly veered into problematic territory. “They [Japan players] look alike, of course. Maybe he [Van de Ven] thought that…I hardly dare say anything,” Van der Vaart stated, according to Goal. This comment, referencing a racist stereotype, immediately ignited a firestorm of criticism online.

Widespread fan outrage

The backlash against Van der Vaart was swift and severe across social media platforms. Fans expressed their disappointment and anger at the nature of the remarks, with many calling for accountability. “Oh man. It was such a good match, but now it leaves a really bad aftertaste all at once. Of course, I know that most Dutch people aren’t like this racist, but it’s just too disappointing,” one unnamed fan commented, as reported by GiveMeSport. Another fan reacted by stating, “Should be taken off air and shouldn’t work again, plain and simple.”

The incident has cast a shadow over the post-match discussion, shifting focus from the exciting football on display to the controversial comments made by the former international.
