Ibrahima Konate’s anticipated free transfer to Real Madrid has been officially confirmed, with the France international signing a four-year deal that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 30, 2030. The move comes after Konate’s contract at Liverpool expires on June 30, following unsuccessful negotiations for a new deal at Anfield.

Real Madrid formally announced the signing on June 18, securing a key defensive reinforcement for what is shaping up to be a significant squad overhaul under Jose Mourinho in his second stint as manager. The Spanish giants endured a trophyless campaign, prompting a rebuild that has seen other players like Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva, and Marc Cucurella reportedly agree to join Los Blancos.

A lucrative move to the Bernabéu

The switch to the Spanish capital brings a substantial financial uplift for Konate. According to El Desmarque, the defender is set to earn €24 million gross per season, translating to approximately €460,000-a-week before tax. This represents a significant increase from his reported £150,000-a-week earnings at Liverpool. His new four-year contract is said to be worth a total of £83 million, and he is also in line to receive a £17 million signing-on bonus.

Konate will join a competitive central defensive lineup at Real Madrid, vying for a starting spot alongside Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, and Raul Asencio. His formal presentation is expected after the conclusion of the World Cup, where he is currently representing France.

Liverpool’s muted farewell

Konate’s departure from Liverpool marks the end of a three-year spell at Anfield, during which he made 183 appearances after joining from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021. His time on Merseyside was decorated with silverware:

  • Premier League
  • FA Cup
  • Carabao Cup (twice)
  • FA Community Shield

Despite his contributions, Liverpool’s official statement regarding his exit was notably brief, merely confirming his move to Real Madrid and listing his appearances and trophies, without a customary thank you for his service. This contrasted with Konate’s own sentiments, who took to Instagram to express his regret at not being able to bid a proper farewell. “deeply saddened that I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game,” he wrote.

The defender had previously indicated he was “close to an agreement” to extend his stay at Liverpool before negotiations ultimately broke down. Liverpool is now expected to seek a replacement, though they already have 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet arriving from Rennes after agreeing a £55 million deal in the January transfer window.
